A copper alloy figurine of a man wearing an apron, probably a blacksmith. The figure is standing and the object is 101.6mm long, 62.7mm wide and 19.5mm thick. He has neck length curly hair, a beard and moustache, and wears a collarless shirt with the sleeves rolled above his elbows. He has breeches that come to just below the knee and his calves are bound with criss-crossing straps. He wears a long apron with a narrow top which is tied behind his back. A copper alloy medieval object; a form of annular buckle called a disc-on-pin buckle, of Redmayne Type D. The buckle has a diameter of 27.3mm and is 8.5mm thick. It has a circular frame which is oval in section and has faint traces of beaded decoration on the front. The frame has a constriction for the pin. An unusual feature of the frame is a narrow bar, cast in one piece with the frame, which divides the circle in half. The bar is positioned at the back of the frame and is circular in section. Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A silver hammered coin attached to a piece of lead. The coin is cracked round the edges and half of one side is firmly attached to a sub-circular piece of lead. The coin seems to be attached by the lead corrosion that has developed. The coin is very worn and is totally illegible, but it appears to be medieval in date. The lead is bent so that it lies against the half of the coin to which it has fused, but then bends back away from the coin at a forty five degree angle. The piece of lead is larger than the coin and extends beyond the coin on the bent away side. In total, the object meas…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy swivel component from a medieval dog leash. The object is a loop with a diameter of 22.2mm, and one side which is extended, decorated and flattened. A circular hole or tube running through the flattened side was probably to attach to another element which together would have formed a swivel allowing the elements to rotate freely. Half of the loop is circular in section, with a diameter of 3.7mm, and the rest is decorated by being moulded into three spikes on each side, flanking the flattened edge. The spikes are further exaggerated by incised lines, probably devolved an…

A lead alloy object which may be a gaming piece, a standing weight or a non-functional off-cut from a larger piece of lead. The object is 29.4mm high, 18.9mm wide and 15.2mm thick. The object is a rounded triangular pyramid shape, but the apex is not central. One face is convex and the apex is above this face. The edges of this face are moulded into rounded ribs. The junction of the other two main faces is very rounded and curves towards the apex. The base is not quite flat, but the object stands best on the small triangular face. Overall, the object looks rather like the claw of a lar…

A lead alloy mould for making a single button. The object is a sub-oval, rough, thick piece of lead with unfinished and irregular edges. It is 62.6mm long, 23.3mm wide and 9mm thick. On one face is an impression which is concave, circular and decorated with radiating lines. A casting gate leads into the impression. The button impression is at one end of the object, and at the other end of the same face is a very small (2mm square) square impression. Geoff Egan suspects that there would have been two other parts to the mould, which would have flanked a bent wire for the loop, which w…

Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Nottinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy seal matrix which is circular and is medieval. The matrix is 19.5mm in diameter and is 6.8mm thick. There is a rib on the reverse which expands into a pierced lug at one end. The design appears to be an animal with four legs and a long tail in a tree. It is likely to represent a squirrel. The legend reads: " * SIGILLVM ANORIS", but the N should be an M making it "AMORIS", translating as 'the seal of love'. Another matrix with the same legend is recorded as IHS-D269D4 on the database, and another expressing a similar idea is IHS-54B227. The squirrel may represent secrecy…

The loop continues on to the head of the brooch where it forms a narrow crest which stands proud of the head, leaving an arch underneath. Only about quarter of the length of the pin survives. Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Nottinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy knop which is possibly Roman. The knob is 31.6mm thick, with a maximum diameter of 27.4 round the median flange. It is basically biconical, with a truncated and slightly domed top, concave upper sides curving to the medial band, and with the other cone elegantly extending into a shaft which flares out again at the bottom. There is a disc of metal on the base which seems to be acting like a rivet; it forms a thin, bruised, circular disc with a millimetre gap between the foot of the knob and the disc. The knob was presumably attached to a thin piece of metal, but not iron…
