Prehistoric notched flint flake
The flake appears to be core rejuvenation flake and is cortical with remnants surviving near the distal end. Near the distal end on the opposite face is a retouched notch (13mm long). The flint is patinated pale grey and the notch appears to cut through the patination, implying secondary use of the flake.

Object type: HARNESS FITTING
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Swansea
Workflow stage: Published
Roman copper alloy harness fitting or terret of strap-mounted type of 1st or 2nd century AD date.
The terret is of simple, double-looped form (strap-mounted) and is complete, but eroded (with an overall length of 41.5mm and a weight of 21.2g). The rein loop is oval (with an external width of 36.5mm and an internal width of 28.2mm and internal height of 24.7mm). The loop is of oval section near the base, becoming circular and thinning at the apex (with a maximum diameter of 6.9mm and minimum diameter of 1.8mm). It is unclear whether the loop has narrowed because of wear through rubbin…

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Swansea
Workflow stage: Published
Roman copper alloy brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth Part 3, Group 4.l, flat wing ends type), dating to the 80-160 AD The brooch is near complete, missing the pin and catch only, and has a length of 53.7mm and a weight of 10.3g. The spring mechanism is still in place and was secured by a Polden Hill type arrangement, with pierced lugs at the terminals of the wings. A claw was employed to tension the chord on the head. The wings have a width of 20.5mm and have expanded circular terminals (8mm diameter), which are angled towards the rear. The sides of the bow have c…

Object type: DIRK
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Swansea
Workflow stage: Published
Middle Bronze Age bronze dirk of Group II or Group IV with Group II affinities (Burgess & Gerloff, 1981, p 62 - 65), perhaps dating to the Penard metalworking industry (c.1275-1120 BC following Needham et al. 1997), corresponding to the latter part of Needham's (1996) Period 5 (dated to 1500 - 1150BC).
The dirk has a damaged butt and is eroded, but is otherwise complete (with a length of 159mm and a weight of 38.2g). The butt was trapezoidal (with a maximum surviving width of 45.5mm) without a central rib or notches. The butt appears to have broken through two rivet holes, position…

Object type: WINGED AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Swansea
Workflow stage: Published
Late Bronze Age bronze end-winged axe, belonging to the Carp's Tongue complex of Ewart Park metalworking, corresponding to Needham's (1996) Period 7 and dated to c. 950-750BC.
The winged axe is incomplete, missing both wings on the unlooped side (the axe has an overall length of 1360.9mm and a weight of 282.8g). The butt protrudes beyond the return of the wings (by 14mm) and expands to the end (with a width of 22.4mm and a thickness of 6.1mm). The end of the butt has two 'horns' each side of a central rectangular break, which would have been attached to the casting jet before remov…

Object type: PIN
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Swansea
Workflow stage: Published
A loop-headed ringed pin, with slightly pitted, stripped surface and golden colour (typical of some beach finds). The ring has a dark corrosion layer on the surface, remnants of which also survive on the shaft. The ring is of 'fixed' type, with a constriction where it fits through the loop head of the pin; the pin can therefore swing, but not move freely around the ring. The ring is of lozenge cross-section, and is decorated with five groups of transverse incised lines. The pin has a raised transverse moulding at the junction of the loop head with the shaft. The shaft changes in cross…

Object type: PALSTAVE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Swansea
Workflow stage: Published
Middle to Late Bronze Age axe fragment, probably from a palstave and possibly dating from c.1300 - 750BC The palstave is represented by a blade fragment, broken before the stop and missing the blade edge (with a surviving length of 50.9mm and a weight of 102.1g). The palstave body is near sub-rectangular at the break (with a width of 25.2mm and a thickness of 16.1mm); the blade faces are convex across their widths and the sides are slightly divergent to the mid points. The casting seam is discernable on the sides. The sides expand slightly towards the blade although any blade tips hav…

Object type: AXE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Swansea
Workflow stage: Published
Probable Bronze Age fragment, possibly from an axe The bronze object is fragmented and with all edges rounded, possibly through water-rolling (with a length of 15.9mm, a width of 34.8mm, a thickness of 7.8mm and a weight 16.8g). The condition of the object makes any identification speculative. The fragment is of sub-triangular section, resembling the blade of an axe. The sides are not present and the faces are flat. The blade edge has been lost and there no surviving evidence for a socket base. The fragment has a dark green surface patina. The general shape of the bronze may suggest a…

Crudely cast, slightly waisted, copper alloy vessel leg. Length 41mm, width 28-33mm, thickness 18mm, weight 77.4 grams. Identifying the vessel type that this leg is from is not possible. Presumably it was either a cauldron, skillet, jug or ewer. Close dating is equally difficult as the form of the legs like this did not change from the medieval period until the seventeenth century (Read 1995, 95).

Several cast copper alloy vessel fragments including the basal end of two vessel legs form different vessels but both plano-convex in section and with decorative outer longitudinal ribs; cast copper alloy rim fragments from four different wide and steep sided vessels (probably cauldrons); and a cast copper alloy rim fragment from a wide and steep sided vessel which includes an integrally cast suspension loop, the upper part of which contains a pronounced wear facet.

Freestanding discoidal crudely cast lead, or lead alloy weight decorated with a cross motif. Diameter 23-25mm, thickness 6.5mm, weight 23 grams. Lead weights such as these could have performed a variety of functions such as unofficial weights and measures used by traders and merchants. Dating them is difficult, excavated examples range in date from the medieval period to the nineteenth century.

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Swansea
Workflow stage: Published
Lead, or lead alloy (pewter), slightly domed button with a large attachment loop. The button is decorated with a moulded quatrefoil design. Diameter 14mm, weight 5.8 grams. Although lead is a soft metal, and therefore inherently unsuitable for use as a button, the ease with which it could be moulded ad its relative cheapness led to it being used for such a purpose (Bailey 1997, 38). Study of the flash lines on this example suggest that it was cast in a three-part mould. Comparable lead buttons are known from thirteenth century contexts in London (i.e. Egan 1991, 274, no.1376, fig.178)…

Complete cast copper alloy vessel leg. Part of the apparently integrally cast body of the vessel remains attached to the leg. Length 78mm, width 16-17 mm, weight 115.2 grams. Medieval to post-medieval. The surface of the leg is preferentially blackened in comparison to the inside of the vessel body; this "sooting" is a common phenomena and is due to oxidisation of the outer surface of the vessel through exposure to the cooking fire.

Fragment of a large iron vessel (cauldron?) consisting of a separately forged leg, plano-convex in section and with a decorative outer longitudinal ridge, and part of the vessel's base. Dimensions of surviving portion of the vessel's base 96mm x 72mm, vessel thickness 6mm, length of leg 45mm, weight 276.4 grams. Although cast iron vessels of this form were used until the early twentieth century the longitudinal ridge on the leg is similar to those decorating late medieval and post-medieval copper alloy vessel legs suggesting it may be of earlier date.
