A fragment from a cast lead or lead alloy spindle whorl of Roman to Post Medieval date (1 - 1650 AD), most probably later medieval (1150-1600AD). The spindle whorl is incomplete and approximately 50% survives - originally it would have been broadly circular in plan with a bi-convex cross section. The central hole is circular and has been cast / set off centre; it measures 11.2mm. The upper and lower surfaces are undecorated and the whorl has a mid grey colour. Spindle whorls are used for a long period of time and as such are very difficult to date precisely without other evidence (such…

Cast biconical decorated lead spindle whorl. Spindle whorls are difficult to date, but the location of this find in the vicinity of a Medieval site and other Medieval finds may suggest a Medieval or early Post Medieval date. The whorl is decorated with a number of raised dots near the rim of each face (11 and 13). The surface is eroded, but there is a suggestion of low radiating lines along the face through the dots. The whorl has suffered some damage to the edge.
