Decorated lead weight of medieval to post medieval date The weight is of circular form (17.3mm diameter and 6.7mm deep) and weighs 12.8g (equivalent to 0.4515 ounce). The sides converge slightly to the base and is rounded. The top face has punched decoration, comprising a circular border. The interior is decorated with a shield device with a punched wavy outline. Freestanding discoidal crudely cast lead, or lead alloy weight decorated with a cross motif. Diameter 23-25mm, thickness 6.5mm, weight 23 grams. Lead weights such as these could have performed a variety of functions such as unofficial weights and measures used by traders and merchants. Dating them is difficult, excavated examples range in date from the medieval period to the nineteenth century.
