Object type: PILGRIM BADGE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Swansea
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Medieval open-work lead pilgrim's badge of an uncertain shrine probably of 15th century date The badge is incomplete, missing some of the detail on the left side and with a distorted pin (with an overall length of 48.6mm, a thickness of 1.5mm and a weight of 5.1g). The badge now depicts two figures possibly both saints or clerics, the taller, central figure (giving the badge a surviving height of 41.9mm) appears to have lost both the headgear and his right arm. Freestanding discoidal crudely cast lead, or lead alloy weight decorated with a cross motif. Diameter 23-25mm, thickness 6.5mm, weight 23 grams. Lead weights such as these could have performed a variety of functions such as unofficial weights and measures used by traders and merchants. Dating them is difficult, excavated examples range in date from the medieval period to the nineteenth century.

Object type: BUTTON
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Swansea

Lead, or lead alloy (pewter), slightly domed button with a large attachment loop. The button is decorated with a moulded quatrefoil design. Diameter 14mm, weight 5.8 grams. Although lead is a soft metal, and therefore inherently unsuitable for use as a button, the ease with which it could be moulded ad its relative cheapness led to it being used for such a purpose (Bailey 1997, 38). Study of the flash lines on this example suggest that it was cast in a three-part mould. Comparable lead buttons are known from thirteenth century contexts in London (i.e. Egan 1991, 274, no.1376, fig.178)…

Of the four larger boxes, two have the sides meet at the ends while the other two just lap behind the folded ends. The ends of the boxes are rela…

Object type: SPINDLE WHORL
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Swansea
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Cast biconical decorated lead spindle whorl. Spindle whorls are difficult to date, but the location of this find in the vicinity of a Medieval site and other Medieval finds may suggest a Medieval or early Post Medieval date. The whorl is decorated with a number of raised dots near the rim of each face (11 and 13). The surface is eroded, but there is a suggestion of low radiating lines along the face through the dots. The whorl has suffered some damage to the edge.
