A cast copper alloy figurine in the form of a goat facing sideways and dating to the Roman period. This figurine which would have originally stood on a small platform (now uneven and corroded) at its base. Although badly worn and corroded, it is crudely and simply represented with a sub oval head, a collar around the neck, an arched back, four legs attached together (a small incised line marks the separate legs to the front and back) and a stumped tail at the back. The eyes are also possibly represented with stones. There is no other decoration on this artefact. It is 26mm long, 17.5mm…

A circular sheet copper alloy disc, originally one end of a 'workbox' dating to the seventh century AD. Diameter: 39mm; thickness: 3mm; weight: 5.3g. The object is circular and flat. The front is decorated with a central larger circular raised boss (which has a slight crack in it), with eight rows each of six circular slightly raised smaller repoussé bosses radiating outwards from it towards the outside edge, forming an eight-pointed star. This is not really a chi-rho pattern (this would have six points) but might be interpreted, as a double cross. There are four evenly spaced rive…

Copper alloy plate, probably from a medieval folding strap clasp, with traces of a white-metal coating. Length: 32mm; width: 15mm; thickness: 6mm; weight: 6.4g. The object is sub-rectangular in plan and mostly flat in cross-section. It is made from a length of copper-alloy strip folded in half with a wide gap at the fold, as if to hinge around a bar; the edges taper slightly at this end, as if to accommodate a frame. The other end is fragmentary, but appears to have been decoratively shaped into a circular aperture with a short groove running from this down the centre of the plate. …

The bucket mount is sub triangular in plan and sub rectangular in section and appears to represent a probable ox. At the top of the artefact, there is an integral circular suspension loop (outer diameter of loop: 13.5mm; inner diameter of loop: 6.5mm), which is slightly corroded at the top edge. At the top of the sub triangular ox’s head, there are two incomplete horns. The horn to …

Post-medieval cast lead object dated 1669, probably a toy. It is a flat, sub-rectangular plate with a large, inverted heart-shaped hole cast into it. A short stem, of flat cross-section, extends outwards from the longer edge of the object. There is a casting seam all around the edge and a rough section in the middle of the shorter edge which may indicate where this fragment has broken away from the rest of the object. The object has cast decoration on both faces. One side has two raised semi-circles with radiating lines at the top and pellets scattered down the sides. There are three …

Incomplete cast alloy button and loop fastener. The flat head is incomplete, but the straight edges that remain suggest parallels with rectangular headed button and loop fasteners (see Wild, 1970). An annular attachment loop projects from the centre of the rear of the head. When the object is viewed in profile it can be seen that the loop is offset from the head, and rather than running parallel, the loop diverges from the head at a gentle angle. In total the button and loop fastener is 33.17mm long. The head is 15.08mm long and 14.43mm wide. The object weighs 5.47g. The fastener…

A Medieval finger ring, the hoop of D section. This is decorated on the internal and external surfaces with flowers and leaves, interspersed with the words of an inscription in French in black-letter lower-case letters. On the outside this reads + tant que murai and on the inside + vouz ceroire. This is likely to mean "Until I die I will be yours". This sentiment suggests that the ring may originally have served as a marriage ring. The finger ring is gold and dates from the late fourteenth or the fifteenth century. FINDSPOT Harlaston, Staffordshire, find (2007 T627) I have examined an item found at Harlaston, Staffordshire. It is a silver coin of Venice, specifically a soldino of Doge Leonardo Loredano (1501-21), which has been converted into an item of jewellery by the addition of a decorative and shaped face covering one side – the side which, presumably, was intended to be on view, with the actual coin face not visible. The most likely interpretation is that it has been made into a button, or maybe some other type of dress fastening. The soldini of early 16th century Venice, espec…

An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman brooch of Colchester derivative Polden Hill (Mackreth Group 5, Western Group, flat wing ends), Mackreth 2011, 5.a1. The bar is broken, and the spring and pin are disarticulated, but the elements appear to be held together with soil. DIMS Treasure case 2008 T659: Silver ornamental ring A thin silver band, set with three transparent white stones, either rock-crystal, or more likely glass, in plain collet setting. This is a type that occurs from the later 17th century and continues will into the 18th century. It is therefore not possible to confirm that it is more than 300 years old. As the find can not be securely dated to pre-1708 it falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996. Object type: CHAIN
Broad period: MEDIEVAL

A fragment of a link from a medieval chain or collar. One end is broken. It would have formed a terminal to a letter 'S'. The link has three loops at each existing corner (the fourth is lost). These loops would have connected the link to letters 'S' placed to its left and right. Chains or collars constructed of the letter 'S' were popular from the late fourteenth century and became one of the emblems associated with the Lancastrian dynasty. The link is silver gilt and dates from the fifteenth century. Dimensions: height 15 mm, width 18 mm. Consequently, in terms of age and as…

Silver buckle, curved rectangular frame with scrolls forming a cartouche, pierced to hold a central shank with separate hinged stud chape. This is stamped on the back with what appears to be an illegible maker's mark and possibly a date letter. Probably a knee or shoe buckle, of late 17th Century or early 18th Century type, around 1660-1700. Just possibly after 1709. Compare R.Whitehead, Buckles 1250-1800, nos. 618 and 627 for frame design.
