Object type: RETOUCHED FLAKE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
An incomplete teritary debitage flake, of probable Mesolithic to Early Neolithic dating (6500 BC to 3500 BC). The flake is sub rectangular in shape, and triangular in cross section. A ridge runs the length of the dorsal (upper) surface. The remains of conchoidal ripples are present on the ventral (lower) surface. Controlled retouch is present along the upper left hand edge and can be classified as short, parallel, semi-abrupt. It measures 31.0 mm in length, 15.0 mm wide and 3.2 mm thick. It weighs 1.4 g. The flint is an off white colour, with some surface patination occurring.

Retouched flint flake. Probably Neolithic (3500BC-2100BC). Mass: 8.7g; length: 50.8mm; width: 18.2mm; thickness: 12.4mm. Approximately 25% cortex on the dorsal face, with an arris and unidirectional negative flake scars towards the sub-triangular sectioned proximal end. The distal end has a sub-D-shaped-cross section. The tool has retouch on both edges, particularly on the more convex edge of the dorsal face. The tool may have functioned as a piercer, and its retouched sides may have been utilised for cutting and scraping.

Retouched flint flake. Snapped. Prehistoric, Probably Mesolithic or Neolithic. Mass: 1.6g; length: 19.2mm; width: 16.4mm; depth: 5.2mm. Grey flint, approximately 25% cortex (which covers the proximal end and one side of the flake). Bulb of percussion and ripples of the conchoidal fracture on the ventral face. Semi-abrupt retouch on the (non-cortical) longest edge of the dorsal face, with a slight notch at the proximal end.

Knapped flint side-scraper with a notch. Prehistoric (Neolithic/Bronze Age, or plausibly Upper Palaeolithic). Mass: 11.0g; length: 44.0mm; width: 28.7mm; thickness: 10.3mm. Light brown flint, approximately 5% cortex (at the distal and proximal ends). Bulb of percussion and ripples of the conchoidal fracture on the ventral face, with a retouched notch on one edge towards the proximal end, and some retouch on the opposite edge. Arris and unidirectional negative flake scars on the dorsal face with extensive semi-abrupt retouch on the edge without the notch, and some retouch on the no…

Retouched flint flake. Probably Neolithic. Light grey/off-white flint. Mass: 3.2g; length: 35.3mm; width: 22.1mm; thickness: 4.6mm. Ripples of the conchoidal fracture on the ventral face. Arrises and unidirectional flake/blade scars on the dorsal face, with retouch on all edges except the proximal end. There is a notch on one edge and the distal end narrows to a ?slightly incomplete tip, suggesting that the tool may have functioned as a notched scraper and piercer.

A flint flake, with retouch on the distal end, possibly dating from the neolithic period (3500 BC to 2100 BC). The function of the tool is uncertain. This is a secondary flake, with approximately 10% cortex on the dorsal surface. At the proximal end is the striking platform. The ventral face has a bulb of percussion, and ripples of the conchoidal fracture run down the surface. Ripples on the dorsal surface are broadly unidirectional. Viewed in plan, the distal end is uneven. There is a projection to one side, with retouch on both sides of the distal edge (low angle of retouch,…

A retouched flint flake of probable Neolithic date. The flake is sub-trapezoidal in shape and appears to be broken, missing its proximal end. It has been retouched using pressure flaking on the left lateral edge, and was possibly used as a cutting blade. The flint is a pale cream in colour. It measures 15.4 mm long, 24.65 mm wide, 2.7 mm thick and weighs 1.3 grams.
