Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Neolithic polished flint axe. The axe is 152.2mm long, 62.6mm wide and 28mm thick. It weighs 338g. The axe is a tapering sub-rectangular shape and is ovoid in section with a flat facet at each end of the oval. The curved cutting edge is in good condition but there is some damage to the narrow end and a little of the end is missing. The damage at the haft end appears to be post depositional, but is not very recent, as the break is patinated. The axe patination in general is variable, the variations in colour being difference in patination rather than differences in the stone. The axe…

Cast lead spindle whorl from the Medieval period. It is slightly darker than usual, suggesting some tin is in the metal. It is bi-conical in shape and has a central circular perforation. It is decorated on both sides with cast decoration in the usual star and dot pattern. A dot in each point of the star and also on the outside of the star. This type of object has been used for centuries but this pattern would suggest a Medieval date.

A cast, copper alloy artefact, possibly a pendant, of probable modern date. It is triangular in shape, the corners of the triangle being slightly rounded. Each side has a shallow depression, within which is the raised design of a standing figure facing the left, wearing a robe, a cape with high collar and a headdress, the back of which seems to fall to his shoulders. A lead alloy spindle whorl of a shape used mainly in the Iron Age and Early Medieval period but known from all periods, so of uncertain date. The whorl has two flat faces of equal size and rounded edges. The central hole is 10.05mm in diameter, larger than many Iron Age spindle whorls, so a Roman to Post Medieval date is suggested. There is a slightly raised rim round the centre perforation on one face. There is no fastening hole in the side wall of the perforation. The whorl is grey in colour and has little patination.

A silver ingot probably dating from the Early Medieval period, about 850 - 1000 AD. The silver ingot is cigar-shaped with rounded ends (one tapered to a rounded point). Areas of the top, sides and bottom have been hammered flat in antiquity and there are several testing marks along both sides. The form and testing cuts are typical of ingots of the Viking period found in Scandinavia and on the Continent, as well as in the British Isles, dating…
