Object type: KNIFE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Gwynedd
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Sub circular stone implement, lenticular in section. It is fashioned from a fine dark greenish gray, close grained, hard stone containing frequent white flecks. One side is very smooth, the other appears to have been flaked or split leaving a rougher irregular surface. The proximal end is thick and has what appears to be part of the original surface still surviving at the top of the ventral side; the implement thins towards the distal end. There is what appears to be very rough retouch around the edges away from the butt. This is mostly visible on the dorsal side suggesting it was wor…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Sub-triangular shaped flint flake, pale yellow to amber in colour. The flake has been struck from one point of the 'triangle'. The dorsal side is nearly completely covered in a shiny cream coloured cortex. The ventral side comprises a very flat flaked surface with a slight bulb and pronounced ripples. Both edges of the 'triangle' exhibit evidence of rough retouch while the base of the 'triangle' (distal end of the flake) appears to be the result of an irregular fracture possibly during manufacture as the retouch appears to run along part of the fractured edge. It is possible that this…

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Gwynedd
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Angular piece of fine, igneous rock. Found in submerged peats, next to tree stumps. No other stones visible in the vicinity. It has an angular point at one end and a heavier, more rounded base. No recent fractures can be identified, and all corners are rounded. Possible retoucher (retouch tool) and almost certainly brought to the area by human action.

Object type: CORE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Gwynedd
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Flint core, probably Neolithic, from a small nodule of flint. Cortex is present on two sides of the core, and several blade removals are visible. The flint is dark grey in colour, and has been chipped on every angle, presumably from the action of knocking against pebbles on the stony beach at Porth Dinllaen. Nodules of flint were brought to this area from elsewhere. Therefore this core is probably Neolithic (as opposed to Mesolithic) in date, because items were more likely to have been transported around at this time. However the possibility that the core is Mesolithic should…

Object type: RETOUCHED FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Gwynedd
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Notched/Spurred piece Made on an irregularly fractured fragment of poor quality light grey cherty flint, 34mm long, 35mm wide and 12mm thick. A notch has been created on one edge by a single steep flake removal. The inside of the notch has then been shaped by fine retouch. There are no visible signs of use wear in the notch. Removal of the notch has also created a ‘spur’ at one side which has some possible use edge chipping. This is rather irregular and not really a good diagnostic piece on its own but both notched and spurred pieces are typically found in Late Neolithic asse…

Very large blade fragment. 128 (incomplete) x 32 x 9mm. Dark grey weathered to a creamy grey. Recent damage shows a coarse material, most likely Mynydd Rhiw tuff. Retains some natural(?) fracture surface. Unworked. Assessment: Certainly not a waste product of axe manufacture but probably Later Neolithic. Other similar large blades have been found at Parwyd, Llyn, PRN 3296. (George Smith, Gwynedd Archaeological Trust)

Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Gwynedd
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A broken polished stone axe comprising the butt end half only. In general appearance, it is a mid-brown colour with areas of light tan or cream. It has an elongated triangular shape in plan with a narrow rounded butt. It is lenticular in cross-section but the long side edges are facetted or flattened while the butt end is sharp. The axe is asymmetrical in profile with one face being noticeably humped. This hump has been damaged with a large irregular flake taken out of the surface. The surface of the axe has been polished but many slight irregular hollows remain. The main break is pec…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Possible broken stone axe or scraper. Very irregular sub-trapezoidal shaped stone, the ends are roughly parallel but the edges converge towards the butt end. Heavy cream coloured patina survives on much of the upper face of the object but has been removed on the lower surface and edges. The wider end has been worked with the removal of quite large flakes by invasive, stepped, and abrupt retouch. The other narrower end appears to be roughly broken rather than worked. One edge of the object has also been very roughly worked or possibly broken. The other edge retains its natural profile …

Long struck stone blade (flake). It is made from a 'tuff' which is a metamorphosed sedimentary stone of particularly fine texture. That is to say, the stone was originally sedimentary but has been altered by later geological processes (as opposed to a purely volcanic stone such as at the axe factory site at Graig Lwyd). The blade has been snapped off at both ends. The back of the blade probably represents the original surface of the worked stone. All the other surfaces are now covered in a light greyish patina except for an oval notch knocked out of the sharp edge of the blade where t…

A polished stone axe, probably of Graig Lwyd stone. It is sub-rectangular in plan with an asymmetrical blade. The blade is rounded in plan, very finely polished and quite sharp but with several small scars along the edge as well as on the faces of the blade. The edges of the axe are generally parallel but converge towards the butt end. A short length of one edge near the blade appears to exhibit the remnants of a slight facet. The butt is flat. There is evidence that the axe was finely polished all over but there is considerable surface damage particularly at the butt end. A fine …

A broken axe head. The find represents the cutting edge end of a Neolithic polished axe head belonging to the Group VII (Graig Lwyd) classification. It is sub-rectangular in plan; tapering towards a transverse break at the point the axe was likely hafted. It seems likely this break occurred in antiquity. In section it is sub-ovate with flattened sides. The blade, mostly intact, bares evidence of use, and has retained a defined edge. The faces of the axe are defined by marks and fractures which vary in intensity. One face bears deeper scars than the other. The axe belongs to t…

Neolithic partially polished stone mace head dating to 3rd millennium BC (c. 2800 – 2100BC) The polished mace-head is complete or near-complete (with a length of 98.8mm and a weight of 395.2g) and is of unusual form with a well-defined blade at one end. The butt is rounded and convex (61mm wide, 9mm deep and approximately 20mm thick) but is battered and irregular, possibly resulting from its use as a hammer. Both sides are near-straight, slightly concave across their lengths (83mm and 76mm) and rounded across their widths. The mace head is widest at the blade (with a width of 7…

A complete Neolithic axehead dated c.3750BC - 2500BC. The object is made of a dark grey-black stone which is comparable to Penmaenmawr stone from North Wales. The object is sub-rectangular in plan and has a lentoid cross-section. The centre of the axehead is rounded and has a partically polished surface that has become pitted as a result of weathering. From the centre the body thins slightly to the butt end from a thickess of 43mm in the middle to a 22mm thickness to form a slightly rounded end. At the opposite end, the body narrows slightly and thins to form a slightly curved cu…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A probable prehistoric flint flake, possibly dating to the Neolithic period. The flake is a mixture of light and dark reddish browns in colour. There is evidence of the cortex along one edge. The flake is retouched, with apparent earlier blade/flake removals evident on the dorsal face. The bulb of percussion is visible, although it is difficult to identify any concentric waves along the ventral face which may indicate it is of natural origin. There is a small chip just below the bulb of percussion which suggests it is anthropogenic and as such this is probably a retouched flake (Shopl…

Approximately half(?) of a flaked and ground stone Graig Lwyd axe comprising the butt end. Narrow oval in section. The long side edges are facetted, or flattened and measure 6.62mm wide towards the front and narrowing to 4.69mm wide at the butt. This feature doesn't continue around the butt edge. Overall the surface is generally smooth but irregular with several of the deeper flaking sites surviving as shallow, rough concave scars and more particularly on one face than the other. There are a couple of nicks out of the butt end edge which appear more modern showing little patenation. T…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A probable prehistoric core trimming flake. The find is roughly triangular with a white, yet heavily worn patina. This would indicate that the find has been exposed for some time, likely eroding out of the soil. The flint is truncated at the distal end and probably would have originally extended to a point. The flake has a visible bulb of percussion.

A near complete probable polished stone axehead dating from the Neolithic period. The axe is sub-rectangular in plan, oval in cross section. The axehead tapers outwards with slightly convex sides from the narrower butt to the curving cutting edge. The butt of the axe may be slightly truncated. Both faces of the axe have been polished as evident from the smooth surface of the stone as well as visible markings on the faces. There are chippings present on the stone, as well as what appear to be natural grooves and irregularities in the surface. The two nearest axe sources within the …
