Object type: CRUCIBLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Gwynedd
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Ceramic crucible of probable later Medieval or early post medieval date (1200-1600 AD). The crucible is incomplete and been abraded by flowing water creating smooth rounded edges to the profile. In plan the crucible is irregular; originally it would have been broadly circular, now it is an irregular ellipse. In profile it is an irregular sub-rectangular shape with a relatively narrow base which expands to an open mouth. The water worn damage present has affected one edge more than the other and so diameter of the base and mouth cannot be truly estimated. The fabric is extremely hard wi…

Small spindle whorl or lead weight with central perforation.
One face has a rounded profile, the other is flat. This is likely to be a product of manufacture, but may simply be a result of use.
The object has been subject to some damage over time and consequently several fragments have been chipped off around the edges.

A scatter of flints found in 1998. According to the finder they were found on the seaward side of a field wall near Ogof Llwyd, at Penrhyn, east of Aberdaron.
They comprise 10 small flakes and blades, some of which may have been formed by natural processes. The majority are broken and may be waste flakes left as the result of knapping. Due to the occurrences of cortex in relation to flake size, it is likely that the flakes are the result of working pebbles.

There is also a slightly raised line running either side of the loop across the diameter of the button, probably a casting mark.
