A Post-Medieval lead alloy cloth seal. A two disc type with a missing interconnecting strip. A Post-Medieval lead alloy cloth seal. A two disc type with interconnecting strip. Although the seal is intact it is quite worn around the circumference. The first disc carries the capital letters...AR..... or ......AB....... while the second disc bears a partial number.......1......., this is linked to a madderbag, which was the general symbol of the dyers. The actual dye used by this dye house (almost certainly based on the banks of the River Thames in London) would have been woad, for blue cloth. In this case it was coloured in the capital before being shipped to Durham. Ge…

A Post-Medieval lead alloy cloth seal. A two disc type with a missing interconnecting strip. The seal is in a poor condition with only faint evidence of a stamp or privy mark. There is evidence where the impression of original cloth has been formed against the lead between sections of the two discs. Both discs has been punched in the centre forming two holes (similar to a button), possibly in an attempt to turn the seal in to a dress weight Geoff Egan was unable to allocate a precisde date to this seal other than 16-18th century.
