Cast copper alloy fragment of a Roman trumpet brooch dating to c.75-175 AD.
Only the head and the upper half of the bow remains, the pin and its mechanism, whether spring or hinge are missing and the bow has broken just at the central acanthus style moulding. The trumpet shaped head is slightly broken and uneven, on the reverse is it hollow and the base of a hook, to hold the pin and its mechanism is still present. The bow has a circular cross section and widens at the acanthus style moulding which is a very crude version.

The hoop is circular in plan as well as in cross section. It has eight lozenge-shaped plates attached onto the front of the hoop. Copper alloy head of a Roman trumpet brooch, dating to c. 75- 175 AD.
It is a large, and slightly unusual variety and unfortunately is quite corroded. It is a sprung type, with huge coils, four complete and two which are broken. The wire then threads through the coils. The central broken coil would have extended to the pin but that is now gone. The wire also runs below the spring, connected to both ends.
The head almost immediately narrows away from the spring, which extends above the head. It is sub-traingular in plan, the broken end showing the bow would have had a circular cros…

A cast copper-alloy penannular brooch, probably of the Roman period, though possibly Early Medieval.
The hoop is sub-circular in plan and section, with terminals expanding out from the width of the hoop. Corrosion obscures the exact form of the terminals, which may be a simple expanded/flared form, but may also be of a knobbed variety (like Fowler type A3).
The pin is also cast, with a sub-square section that flattens into a slightly raised tip. The hinge is formed by a flattend end curled under the hoop.
The brooch is larger and heavier than most …

A cast copper-alloy brooch fragment, probably a headstud brooch of the early Roman period, late 1st-late2nd century.
Only the head remains, and this is very corroded. The arms are rectangular in plan with worn vertical grooves. Only the base of the bow remains, with a very abraded break. It may have been decorated, but corrosion obscures interpretation. The base of a headloop is visible, though the loop has been lost. The reverse has tubular casing to take a hinge-pin.
