Fragment of a Bronze Age palstave axe, it has broken just after the septum reaches the blade. All the edges are worn so the break must have occurred in antiquity. Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Denuded copper alloy unlooped palstave in two fragments, found some years ago in the top of a mound (GAT PRN 26156) at the above NGR whilst using a metal detector. The palstave has a flaring blade, although the cutting edge is no longer present and one tip is missing. The rounded stop-ridge is well-defined and a clear individual mid-rib runs from the stop-ridge towards the cutting edge of the blade (the terminus of the rib is unclear due to surface corrosion). Both features are extant on either side of the palstave, but are heavily eroded on one face only. The butt has also suffer…

Copper Alloy chape with ribbed foot and embossed decoration found some years ago in the top of a mound (GAT PRN 26156) at the above NGR whilst using a metal detector. The object has been made from a minimum of two pieces: an embossed sheet, folded around to form a flattened, hollow cone; and a domed and ribbed solid knob, attached to the narrowest part of the cone. The seams are visible on the reverse although it is unclear whether they were soldered together. The surface is much-corroded and although a patina remains on some sections, the higher relief sections of decoration have …

Roman coin (follis?) of the House of Constantine found in the front garden of a house at the above NGR a number of years ago - probably re-deposited. Obverse: Right-facing portrait, likely to be Constantine or one of his children. The bust may be wearing a laureate crown, although this is not very distinct and alternatively it is possible that the bust may be veiled, depicting Constantine in death. The legend is not legible. Reverse: Two soldiers holding one standard. The visible element of the legend - ITVS - is likely to form part of GLORIA EXERTITVS. The reverse was struck too…

Copper alloy ring which appears to be cut from sheet metal rather than cast. The band is quite narrow 2.15mm and 1.63mm thick, it widens to form a decorative shield shape 8.34mm long by 8.00mm wide. The bezel is oriented with its long side parallel to the band and is also 1.63mm thick. There is no design apparent on the bezel though there is a very slight raised lip 4.45mm long running from the bezel and along one edge of the band on one side only. In plan the ring is fairly circular though somewhat flattened on the bezel side. Opposite the bezel the band appears to be soldered. Maxim…

Small looped copper alloy palstave with a plain blade, curved cutting edge and pronounced square stop-ridge. This example was found using a metal detector. The palstave is complete, although it has been eroded around the edges, and the full extent of the cutting edge has worn away. Patches of the original surface remain, although the majority of this appears to have flaked away, leaving a more rough-textured surface c. 1mm below. The patina is largely greenish in colour, although the remaining sections of original surface have a more brownish tinge. The current appearance of the …

Fragment of a copper-alloy belt hanger of suggested late medieval date. Several examples of this category of artefact are recorded on the PAS datbase - see, for example, NMS-1EEA45, NMS-D99313 and IOW-7A0A93. There is also an unprovenanced example in the London Museum collection. It is suggested that they may have served to suspend a sword from a belt. The part which remains is the top of the piece. It is an up-turned L shape and is a heavily stylised zoomorphic head, which has a pronounced nose, deeply-grooved mouth and a flat underside. On the top of the head there are some raised l…
