An incomplete, copper-alloy, early medieval - medieval paddlock key of type C variant. The piece comprises of a round, tubular stem. On one end, the stem widens into square shoulders, from which a flat, retangular, openwork frame extends. This can be interpeted as the bow of the key. Elongated, tertiary long blade, of mottled mid-grey flint now patinated a sandy yellow colour with a patch towards the proximal end that appears to be unpatinated. Several small chips to the thin edges are recent damage, also showing the original colour of the flint. The blade has a meandering medial ridge; when viewed with the point (distal end) upwards, on the right side of the ridge there is a row of percussion …

Object type: ADZE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Large and almost complete adze, of triangular cross section, in rolled condition. The flint has patinated a dark brown colour with the coarse inclusions now a lighter brown, the edges have crumbled due to the flint re-corticating and turning chalky underneath the brown patination, showing as a white grainular surface. The damage to the cutting edge shows the core of the flint is still intact under the thick chalky degradation and a patch of good quality dark grey flint inside. The flint was likely to have been this colour and condition when the adze was knapped to shape. The flake sc…
