Roman copper alloy bow brooch of Crossbow variant type and of 3rd or 4th century date The brooch is fragmentary, missing the pin, most of the foot and the end of one arm (with a surviving length of 64.0mm and a weight of 7.4g). The pin was hinged within sub-circular cylindrical arms formed by rolled sheet copper alloy (with a surviving length of 42.3mm and a diameter of 5.2mm - 6.1mm). The axis bar does not survive and the one surviving knob (9.3mm maximum diameter and 6.9mm long) appears to have been of iron but is no longer ferrous through corrosion. The knob was of uncertain for…

A late medieval to post-medieval copper-alloy knife handle, probably of 16th-century date or slightly earlier. The knife is of scale-tang type, with two copper-alloy scale plates riveted to the integral iron tang. The iron blade of the knife has broken towards its start. No shoulder plate is present between the tang and blade. The handle was attached by three copper-alloy rivets spaced equally along its median length. The handle was decorated with floral mouldings, although little of the design survives. The end cap is expanded, flaring out compared to the scale plates, and is decorat…

Descriptions Socketed axe fragment Dimensions: surviving length 24.5mm; surviving width 50.8mm; width at break 42.0mm; thickness at break 12mm; weight 54.8g. This is the lower blade and cutting edge of a socketed axe, broken across the internal socket aperture in antiquity. The cutting edge is worn and damaged so the original edge no longer survives, but curved shape and the curved expanding nature of the sides suggest it may have originally possessed slightly flared tips. The incomplete nature of this axe means it cannot be definitely assigned a type. The break has occ…

The sides are straight and divergent towards the apex (giving the terminal a maximum width of 17.4mm). The faces are convex across their widths and are slightly thicker at the base (with a maximum thickness of 6.8mm). The faces are decorated prominent incised cro…

Blade fragment from either a spear or possibly a rapier of middle-late bronze age date (c. 1450 - 800 BC). The blade is relatively undiagnostic and is most likely from a spear. It is triangular in plan with a lentoid cross section across the blade. Remains of a high mi-rib is present and this would have given strength to the blade when used. The fragment has been rolled in the ploughsoil and the long edges have been removed. It is possible that across the break on the lower edge the remains of a slight depression can be seen - this is possibly the top of the socket (a naturally weak p…

A cast copper alloy post medieval belt hook / strap fitting AD 1450 - 1650. The plate is heavily corroded and eroded and much detail has been lost. The strap fitting is broadly triangular in form - from the lower edge projects a blunt ended hook which has been cast in one piece and rolled to shape its current form. The external edges of the plate of the mount are segmented with a series of small rounded knop-like projections. At the upper edge is a single D shaped pierced hole (6.2,, x 3.3mm). From the upper edge a small tab like projection extends - this may have formed another sligh…

The brooch employed a spring mechanism, now lost secured between lateral lugs, now truncated (with a width of 16.9mm) with the chord tensioned by a hook at the head. A copper alloy coin weight of probable 15th century - late medieval date (1412-1464). The coin weight was probably used to weigh a full gold noble. It is circular in plan having been abraded in the ploughsoil . The front face of the weight has a single mast ship with a single lis (probably) to the left of the mast and a lion passant to the right. There are no marks on the hull. The reverse is plain and undecorated. The edges of the flan are angular suggesting it had been trimmed to weight during use. The weight is a mid green colour with an even well preserved patina which is laminati…

A very small fragment of cast lead alloy, most probably from the base of a pilgrims ampulla of medieval date (AD 1200-1450). The fragment is irregular in plan and profile. It comprises a small section of the upper face and lower curved edge of the artefact. The face is decorated with curvilinear ribs whose design extends onto the external edge and represents the shell of St James - Patron Saint of Pilgrims. The opposite face is lost. The artefact is a mid-white colour with an abraded and corroded surface patina. A direct parallel has not been found due to the small size of the piece a…

Object type: LINCH PIN
Broad period: IRON AGE

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper-alloy linch pin terminal of later Iron Age or early Roman date, -150 BC - AD 150. The linch pin terminal is a tapered cylindrical shape being circular in cross section - in broad terms it can be described as 'vase' shaped. The base of the terminal is a disc that supports the body of the terminal on its upper face while its lower face reveals the corroded remains of the copper alloy projection being broken flush to the base. Despite the corrosion, it is clear that the shaft was oval in section rather than square or rectangular. The body of terminal tapers in a…
