Record ID: YORYM-5AB9D1
Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy lozenge-shaped mount with two perforations. The orientation the perforations is such that the mount was probably not used. The perforations have been made from the reverse side, leaving an irregular lip around each perforation. There is an incised groove around the edge; the edge of the mount has been damaged, but what remains has been segmented by incised grooves. The reverse of the object is rough and appears to be unfinished.

A broken copper alloy mount from uncertain use (possibly a book fitting, possibly a belt fitting). The terminal end is a narrow point, widening out to a disc for an attachment rivet. Copper alloy book clasp, probably dating from the 11th or 12th century. The two hooked tags are integrally cast. The panel on the body of the clasp shows a zoomorphic figure, possibly a stylised gryphon; this was probably chip-carved. There are two rivets for attachment still intact, located just off the central panel, opposite the hooked tags. The reverse of the object is not decorated. There are no signs of breakage on the clasp. The face of the object still shows traces of gilding.

Copper alloy sheet mount with four off-set perforations for rivets. The mount could possibly have been a side plate for a comb, part of a knife handle, or other furniture mount. The object is decorated with incised lines; there are two rows of squares with punched (but not perforated) centres. To either side of these rows are parallel lines; outside of the parallel lines are zig-zag marks, made with a small-bladed tool that has been struck, pivoted, and struck again, forming a distinctive mark that is heavier where the corner of the tool met the sheet.

A cast copper alloy object of uncertain function, possibly dating from the early-medieval period. Other such finds have been recorded onto the PAS database with multiple identifications, including a bucket mount/escutcheon, girdle hanger or part of a vessel. The object has a central prong with a pointed terminal; this part has a section of a pointed oval. There are two prongs coming off of the central one; these curve away from each other, forming half-circles on either side of the central prong. They have a lozenge shaped section. The undersides do resemble horses head, charact…

Cast copper alloy mount. The object is in the shape of an acorn, with an upper tag at an angle to the ovoid body of the mount. The upper half of this ovoid part has a textured surface, representing the upper shell of the acorn. This is separated from the lower half of the body by two horizontal, parallel incised lines. The lower half of the body is then smooth and otherwise undecorated. There are two integral rivets on the reverse, one at each point of the oval. This object was probably for mounting onto a strap, either a personal belt or a harness strap.

Leaded copper alloy mount. The main decorative motif is a human face, in relief, centred in an ovoid frame. At the top of the object, forming the upper point of the oval, is a foliate decoration. There is a tag coming from the lefthand side of the object; this does not appear to be a result of damage. The mount probably came from the foot of a vessel of Post-Medieval date.

Very thin copper alloy mount depicting the whiskered, squinting face of a lion. The copper sheet is thin enough to have worn through on the nose of the lion. The edges of the mount have been torn and damaged.

Cast copper alloy bar mount dating to the Medieval period. The object comprises a bar with integral rivets on the reverse, and integral terminal pointed lobes on either end. Decoration on the main body of the bar mount consists of worn ribs, arranged vertically as the mount is held with the rivets to right and left. The reverse is undecorated and concave between the rivets. A mount of comparable size with integral rivets is known from excavations in London; it was suggested that this example was rather for a casket than for a strap.
