A complete cast copper alloy weight. It is globular, with a flat base. There is a small circular perforation at the top, which widens to the base (diameter of hole at top 2.5mm, diameter of hole at bottom 5.76mm). The perforation appears to have been cast with the weight. A fragment of possible copper-alloy metal working debris. It is neatly formed, oval shaped in plan and section with a smooth upper(?) surface. Some post-depositional wear and corrosion is visible on all surfaces. This fragment measures 16.13mm in length, 14.90mm in width, 7.52mm in thickness and 7.82g in weight. It is probably a relatively neat by-product of metal working, although given the findspot a function as a small weight, counter or similar object cannot be ruled out entirely. A cast copper-alloy ring of uncertain date. It is possibly a finger ring, although this does not seem likely as the interior of the loop is not smoothed and it has a fairly small diameter (interior 12.9 mm, exterior 19.29 mm). It is more likely that the ring is a strap or harness fitting or some similar object. Such rings were in use throughout history, and so dating it outside of a context is very difficult. It is 3.6 mm high, 2.84 mm thick and weighs 3.4 grams. It has a dark green patina yet where it is corroded it is a paler green and parts have a purple hue.

A thin gold ring shaped object, with ornate spiralled design and oval lilac stone setting. Dark areas indicate that this object could consist of gold leaf over another material. This may not have originally been a finger-ring; the material is extremely thin, too thin to conceivably be used to construct a finger-ring. It is indicated that the item has been straightened and glued, making identification difficult. The object is not in its original state and so identification in the current condition could be misleading and therefore there is no evidence to date to pre 1711.

A fragment of cast copper-alloy, date and function somewhat uncertain. The object has a rounded terminal and is clearly broken at the other end. It is convex on one side, concaved on the other, with a ridge running diagonally and off-centre from the break to the ther curved terminal on this the concaved side. The curvature and ridge suggest it is not the tip of an axehead. It is very possibly the tip of a foot from a cauldron or skillet, although the curvature and relative thinness make this unlikely. Alternatively it may be part of the rim from an object such as a chafing dish, but t…

A cast copper-alloy object, currently of uncertain function and date. The object is cross shaped with four arms, one of which is alomst entirely missing, whilst another is missing its tip. These are set around a lozengiform central perforation. The two complete arms have terminals which are narrowed and circular, suggesting that these may have slotted into something, though what this may have been is currently unclear. This record may be updated in the future if the object gets recognised.

It has some similarities (in shape and cross-section) to Roman drop-handles.

A broken cast copper-alloy object of uncertain date and function. The artefact is T-shaped in plan and broken at the end opposite the transverse bar. The longitudinal element curves through ninety degrees from the point at which it emerges from the transverse bar. It has flattened sides and lower surface and a curved upper surface. Set at ninety degrees to it, the centre of the transverse bar has the same cross section. Emerging from the central section is a narrowed arm to each side of circular cross-section. These arms terminate in expanded, flattened ends. On the front of the centr…

2 small rolls of lead sheet, unkown date and function. The upper one (in the image) has a weight of 11.3g, is 36.73mm long and has a diameter of 10.30mm. The lower one (in the image) has a weight of 11.4g, is 31.19mm long and has a diameter of 9.41mm. The Romans did have curse tablets which consisted of writing a curse on a small piece of lead sheet and then rolling it up before offering it to the gods, many have been found in the spring at Bath. As stray finds, out of context (and still rolled up) it is difficult to say whether these are Roman curse tablets or just pieces of…

A lead alloy spindle whorl of uncertain date. It is circular in plan and D shaped in section with one flat and one domed face. There is a central circular hole which seems to have straight sides. The shape of the spindle whorl corresponds with Coppergate type A1 (Walton Rogers, 2007) which were used from the 6th century. However, it may also be medieval. The lead has a dark yellow patina.

A pair of copper alloy pivoting staples of unknown date. The two staples are a rounded square in section, and each is made of a single piece of copper alloy, tapering towards the ends. They are hooked round each other, and two ends squeezed together so they cannot be separated. One staple has the ends bent out sideways at right angles; the tips of three of the four arms are missing. Similar stables are illustrated in The Medieval Household and are described as follows: "Pairs were presumably to join two boards, one fixed, and the other the lid of a simple box, a hinged shutter or shel…

While this object was initially described as a cannon ball there is no doubt that it is in fact a fossil sponge and dates from the Cretaceous period. These objects are flint and not uncommon in chalk areas of the country. The slightly irregular, spherical shape and the small scar are typical features. Any future finds should not be recorded.

An undatable lead conical weight with iron ?nail in situ, measuring 29.37mm in length and weighing 73.7g. The weight is 23.46mm in diameter around the centre, narrowing to 14.76mm at one end and 15.42mm at the other. Both ends are flattened off, and the internal diameters are 8.73mm and 8.83mm respectively. The length of the actual weight is 27.31mm, but the (10.46x6.03mm) rectangular head of the iron nail protrudes at one end. Its shaft is visible inside from the other end. The lead is pitted but where the patina survives is a brownish in colour. The iron is not badly corroded. T…

A worn and corroded, broadly circular cast lead object, possibly a spindle whorl or other weight. The whorl is plano-convex, with a trapezoidal cross-section. The top is generally flattened, with one side angled, possibly as a result of wear. It is basic and has suffered heavy corrosion and some small losses at the base. It is seemingly undecorated. The artefact has a central hole with a diameter of c. 9.6mm. The object is 8.9mm thick and weighs 9.54g. It has been pointed out that the weight of a spindle whorl is suggestive of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle wh…
