Object type: COIN
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A small, worn and possibly cut object, perhaps a coin, of uncertain date. The metal is silver/grey in colour, although the wear and some encrustation make it difficult to ascertain precisely what the metal is and it could well be a more recent alloy. The original object has worn or been clipped/cut to leave a small flan that is approximately circular in shape. One face has traces of decoration that comprises part of a legend reading []VM[] with a line below. The style of the lettering is similar to Iron Age or Roman coinage, however it may equally be of much later Medieval to Post-Medi…

The find consists of a rough, cylindrical ingot with rounded ends and hammered surfaces; length, 38.1 mm; width, 12.4 mm; weight 30.58 g. It does not conform to the usual shape of either Roman or Early Medieval ingots and has no distinguishing features. It is therefore undiagnostic and undatable, so does not qualify as Treasure under the stipulated criteria of the Treasure Act. We recommend that the Secretary of State should disclaim the Crown's interest in this find and should be grateful if the Coroner would authorise its return.

A complete cast copper-alloy ring, probably a finger ring. Internal diameter: 15.6mm; external diameter: 20.1mm; depth: 3.6mm: mass: 2.1g. The finger ring consists of a plain sub-circular hoop which has an oval cross-section. There has been loss of material on portions of the hoop, leaving a pitted, green surface, but otherwise the ring has a smooth green patina. The ring is of generally consistent width and thickness, although there are corroded portions which are narrowed. Finger rings consisting of circular hoops of consistent width and thickness are known from the Roman period (Gu…

Silver ring, possibly a finger ring. The band is wide, undecorated and has an inward facing D-shaped cross section. The fact that the ring has a convex internal surface suggests that it may not be a finger ring. Undiagnostic Description: silver band, probably a fitting, with undecorated surface. The interior of the fitting is convex, indicating that this is indeed a fitting rather than a finger-ring. Discussion: There are no diagnostic features to the fitting, therefore it is not possible to conclusively date the fitting.

A copper alloy disk, possibly a token or a mount, and probably cast. One side has a raised design with three roughly parallel elongated ovals, possibly depicting fish, with a background of undulating lines, possibly waves, with a three-pointed crown above and at right angles to the lines. The rim is raised and roughly beaded, and the other side is blank with a slightly rough area around the edge. The shape is roughly circular with one straight edge. There is some corrosion on both sides. Its function and date are unclear.

A large cast copper alloy object, possibly a needle of some sort but of uncertain date. It is oval shaped in section with a sub-triangular head that tapers to a curved shaft and the remains of the now missing point. The top of the head is bilobate resembling the curved upper edge of a bone and has a central circular perforation. On either side of the object below the perforation where the head joins the shaft are moulded diagonal grooves. Beneath this the shaft curves and tapers sharply towards the tip. All exterior surfaces demonstrate signs of corrosion with many pock marks visible, …

Undated lead object, 42mm long and 38mm in diameter. The object is in fair condition with a grey patina and weighs 378grams. The object consists of two slightly flattened spheres which are joind by a short circular sectioned shaft. The spheres are slightly mis-aligned so the gap is larger on one side, this may be a deliberate functional attribute. The object is reminiscent of a pulley, but it is most probably a weight of some sort.

A Copper alloy fragmet of uncertain date. The fragment forms the junction between a loop and a bar, both of which features are missing from old breaks. The Junction is decorated with three concentric bands, each overlapping the one below it. These bands have been decorated with incised diagonal lines. The same design appears to continue around the outside of the loop. The fragment is reminisant of the juctoin between the loop and the shank on a medieval key, but it appears too elaborate and is too fragmenty to indentfy what object it is with any certainty.

Cast lead weight, possibly a spindle whorl. Biconical with a perforation running through the centre. Outer diameter of 31.5mm, and the central perforation is 6.7mm in diameter. The object is 11.0mm thick, and it has a mass of 43.4g. The object has a pitted light brown/grey surface. Both sides of the weight are decorated with raised pellets and ribs, although these are more pronounced on one side. These weighs are not yet completely understood. It is possible they could have been spindle whorls - at the Austin Friary in Leicester (see Mellor and Pearce, 1981), a decorated whorl was fou…

A fragment of thick gold sheet, roughly pentagonal in shape and part cut, part broken from a larger piece; width, 23 mm. It is undecorated and has no diagnostic features, so is undatable. Due to the undiagnostic nature of the find and lack of a secure archaeological context it can not be securely dated to pre-1707 and as such falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996.

Fragment of cast copper alloy of unknown function and unknown date. In plan the artefact is sub-rectangular with rounded tip and base, in profile it is lentoid. One long edge is slightly curved and it is possible that this may represent a bevelled cutting edge, possibly of a razor or spearhead. If this were the case the artefact is most likely to date from the later Bronze Age (post 1500 BC). However, the surface patina has been removed through abrasion in the soil and there are no other indicative marks which would suggest the function of the artefact. In conclusion the artefact is to…

There is a plain border along the long sides with a border divided into small squares outside that. The hole interrupts the design.
