An incomplete cast copper-alloy object, possibly a very small buckle frame of uncertain date. It is missing one side due to old breaks and has very worn surfaces. The object is cylindrical in form, curving around at either end where it terminates in very worn old breaks. If this is indeed a buckle each of the ends would have joined a now missing bar that would have given the object an oval shaped frame. It measures 8.69mm in length, 4.65mm in width, 1.66mm in diameter and 0.12g in weight.

The object is flat-backed, with surfaces curving towards a sharp aris enclosed within the frame; in effect it is of triangular section. The buckle form is noted at South Shields Fort and in other military contexts. However, a later date is also possible: a slightly larger buckle of this form from London (Egan and Pritchard 1991, no. 472) has been compared to Roman finds, but also to a girdle buckle from a Later Medieval woman's burial. Cast copper alloy circular buckle with cast copper alloy pin. This buckle is similar to 13th - 14th century circular buckles. The obverse surface of the frame has been decorated with a series if large, high relief pellets. The pin is however rather unusual. It is square in section for approximately half of its length and then the section changes to being circular. A third of the pin has a screw thread indicating that the buckle has been adapted or is modern in date.

A copper alloy pin from a buckle, or possibly a brooch, of uncertain date, Roman to Post Medieval. The pin is D shaped in section and is bent into an open loop at the attachment end. There is a longitudinal groove along the centre of the pin loop. The pin itself tapers from the loop to a blunt point. The pin is made from a piece of metal which is 2.2mm thick. The metal has a grey green patina. As brooch and buckle pins change very little in style, it is impossible to closely identify this object, but it is perhaps most likely that the pin is from a Medieval or Post Medieval buckle.

A fragment of a copper-alloy Post-Medieval buckle frame, probably dating to the Georgian period. The fragment weighs 5.56g and would have been from a two-piece buckle. Only one side of the frame survives. This indicates that the frame was curved, the middle forward projecting and the corners set further back. Thus, the front has a convex curve and the frame creates a concave reverse area. The arm of the frame has a 'D' shaped cross-section with flatter reverse and rounded front, inner and outer edges. At the corners the arm has a width of 4.1mm and thickness of 3.9mm. The middle of th…

Single loop rectangular buckles can date from c.AD1300 to at least AD1500, see Whitehead R. 2003, pp.26-27, nos.126-133. The recorder suspects that these buckles with forward projecting off-set bars are likely to be for use with horse harness, the dating possibly extending to at least the first half of 20th century AD?  This would give a wide date range of Medieval to the early Modern period. Incomplete Roman fitting, probably part of a buckle froma military belt set. Cast in copper alloy there is traces of tinning on the surface. The surviving fragment is sub-rectangular with a curved lower edge and a circular perforation projecting from the apex, which is perpendicular to the main fitting. The fragment is similar to buckles illustrated in Frere, 1984, Verulamium excavations volume III fig 13.94/95. This buckle is military and of Early Roman, pre-Flavian date. Parallels can be found in Grew and Griffiths,1991. Early Roman, c. AD 43-96.

A copper alloy fragment of a Roman military style zoomorphic buckle. A little less than half of the object survives. It is 28.5mm long, 27.1mm wide and 8.1mm thick. The buckle would have been in the form of two animal heads face to face forming the frame, and their tails forming the bar. Just one animal from this buckle survives. The side of the bar that would have joined the plate is flat and rough, with file marks visible. The opposite face of the bar is peaked, making the bar a pentagon in section. The bar thickens and becomes rounder as it merges with the frame at the sides and f…

A copper alloy Roman openwork rectangular buckle plate. At one end are four equally spaced hinge loops, the gaps of which would have received the interlocking loops from the buckle frame and pin. The two outer loops are narrower than the central two and each has a decorative groove filed in its upper surface; the inner loops are wider and have a pair of these grooves. Close to the hinge loops are three decorative circular holes, running across the width of the plate, each aligned with a gap between the hinge loops. Between these holes and the hinge loops are two small outer rivet h…

Cast copper-alloy buckle with D-shaped frame and integral openwork triangular plate. Length 58mm, width 36mm, weight 15g. The frame has a large central triangular aperture; the edges are bevelled inside and out, giving a trapezoidal cross-section to each arm. The frame also has bevelled edges and a trapezoidal cross-section. The bar between the frame and the plate has a constriction in the centre for the pin; the construction is circular in cross-section and the pin is now missing. Flanking the plate just beyond the pin bar are two semicircular lugs, each of which have a circular rive…

A cast copper-alloy buckle frame which could be Roman or early medieval in date for which no published parallel could be found. The frame is oval in shape and measures 37.05mm in width by 21.53mm in length. It is difficult to see how this frame would have functioned, the sides and one edge have a D-shaped in section (a flat back face and rounded front face) but the other possibly inner edge has a rectangular flattened part with two small transverse grooves across the centre of its edge. This edge is worn and slightly uneven, so possibly it has been modified and could perhaps have ev…

A fragment of a copper-alloy object of uncertain date and function. The general form of this piece suggests that it may be part of a late Roman to early Early-medieval buckle, part of the 'Soldiers and settlers' category of material as discussed by Hawkes and Dunning (Medieval Archaeology; 1961). The piece, which is broken off at both ends, consists of a roughly lozenge-shaped plate with two short, curved protrusions at one end. At the same point on each side is a punched ring-and-dot mark, the inner ring also having a series of small punched circular indentations. If the buckle the…

Complete cast cu-alloy late Roman pelta-shaped buckle dating to the 3rd century AD. This buckle is probably a derivative of late Roman military dolphin buckles. The buckle frame no longer has the shape of two dolphins, but is layed out in a simple geometrical style with the rectangular strap bar attached to the loop. S Laycock and C Marshall argue that "...the distribution of the dolphins buckle along the imperial borders in continental Europe makes it fairly clear that the buckles there have a primarily military function. Their stylistic diversity and distribution on civilian, as well…

Very abraded fragment of Romano-British round section bar broken at both ends. On one side and truncated by one break a V-section projection. Almost certainly part of a buckle frame of Hawkes and Dunning (1961) type IIA, the projection being the crest of a dolphin. The break other than the above-mentioned occurs just past a slight curve that does not fit this identification, but is probably the result of distortion. Surviving length 21mm, diameter 5.5mm, width across crest 10mm. 4th century.

A copper alloy sub-D-shaped buckle. Most likely a Late Roman to Early-Medieval Military strap or belt fitting (or possibly a harness fitting). Oval frame, with a smaller trapezoidal second loop. The main oval loop is notched for the pin, with a small decorative knop to either side of the notch. Two incised lines run between the oval and trapezoidal loops forming a small ridge. Part of the iron pin (and a patch of iron corrosion) survive on the outer frame of the trapezoidal loop (although the pin would usually be attached to the frame between the two loops). There is a small trace o…
