Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A worn and corroded sub-conical weight cast in lead. The crude base bears an off-centre perforation which runs along the length of the object (Dia.: c. 7.6mm); the hole tapers slightly towards the top. Around the hole is possibly a circular groove. This weight is undiagnostic and could date anywhere from the Roman to post-medieval periods.

Copper alloy bead that appears to have been formed by rolling a sphere which was then pierced by a pointed tool from both sides when still plastic. It is 11.7mm in diameter, 9.7mm thick and weighs 5.11 grams. The piercing varies in width being largest and the outer edges and tapering towards the middle, at the maximum it is 4.8mm in diameter. A cast copper-alloy mount of uncertain date. The piece is flat and sub-oval in plan with an oval shape missing one end where there is a straight edge which may be complete or an old break. The front is decorated by a central dot with a large incised circle around it. Between this circle and the edge are three circular perforations for attachment. They are arranged in a triangle and the arrangement suggests the straight edge was not attached to an object in the same way as the opposite end. It may suggest the straight edge is original or possibly had a projection from it. Although plai…

The ring has a rectangular cross-section with rounded corners. It is broadly circular internally with a maximum diameter of c. 16.7mm. It can be compared with faceted Roman finger-rings of Henig type IX/Guiraud type 9a. However, it would be of unusual form if it were one. An incomplete silver mount, now worn but possibly originally formed from a coin or token. To one side (possibly the reverse of a coin) a square hole (3.65x3.30mm), presumably for fixing, has been cut into the surface but does not pierce the object all the way through. The 'obverse' of the object has a possible right-facing bust within a wider border between two concentric grooves. Forms of letters are distinguishable in the border (possibly a C_R between 7 and 9 o'clock) but otherwise any legend is lost. The 'reverse' may have depicted a shield or object of similar 'heater iron' sha…

Object type: RING
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper-alloy ring with a hexagonal section. It has flat sides and points at the centre of the inner and outer edges. The points are worn in places and rounded and in others are more pronounced, possibly form mis-alignment of the mould in casting. It is 27.4mm in external diameter, 3.8mm wide by 3.1mm thick and weighs 4.80 grams. Such rings are very hard to date and had a variety of uses, most are suspension rings of some form from straps and harnesses. Geake (2001, 74) suggested rings of this type are medieval or post-medieval harness ring.

Both lower arms and one leg is missing, all with worn breaks (presumably old damage). The surviving leg apparently also terminates in a worn break. The head is a squashed-sphere in shape, the back being much lower than the front and resembling a triangle when viewed in profile, the top of the head being the sloping edge. A moulded rim runs around the top of the head, pre…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A corroded medieval to post-medieval cast copper-alloy object of unknown purpose. The overall shape in plan is axe or chisel-like, whereby from a sub-rectangular section at one end it tapers in thickness and curves inwardly at both sides, then flares back out towards the thin end. The non-flared end is the thickest point and terminates in an old break. Its possible use as a Bronze Age tool such as a chisel has been examined by Dr Ben Roberts the curator for Bronze Age objects at the British Museum, and discounted. The shape suggests there may have been another symmetrical half attache…

County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete rotary key of plausibly Roman or early-medieval date. It is of unusual construction having a copper-alloy cast bit, stem and lower handle, and a bow of iron that has largely corroded away. The stem has an oval cross-section and tapers slightly from the bow to the tip where it is hollow. The moulded bit is rectangular in cross-section but now vestigial having broken as a result of old damage. A moulded and incised collar divides the stem from the handle (W.: 13.6mm). The lower bow continues the widening of the collar and begins to bifurcate. It narrows slightly to a recta…
