Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Gwynedd
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy sub-rectangular probable mount, found using a metal detector. Appears to have been broken off a larger object, but it is unclear how long it would have originally been. One face is polished. There are small transverse cut marks along one edge of the object, and a thin decorative line running parallel with the edge on the polished face.

Comprises a short cast iron shaft that expands at one end to form two prongs possibly originally a loop now broken and worn. The other end of the shaft terminates in a decorative plate or plaque consisting of a series of lobes of different lengths around the periphery with a raised ring at its centre. All very worn and rounded. Possibly a horse trapping - bridle fitting?

An irregular oval lump of copper alloy with one fairly flat side (base?). There are two short prongs projecting from the top of the rounded side, one 8.0mm long the other 10.27mm long with a semi circular perforation between them possibly representing the remnant of a means of attachment. Part of some broken decoration, or the top of a bell?

A side of a set of antlers, broken off just above the skull and comprising two tines. Shows signs of wear/use comprising two fairly flat facets on one side that define more or less the same plane of wear. Two other minor wear surfaces exist: one at the tip of the main tine and the other halfway along the smaller one. These do not seem to be associated. The smaller tine also appears somewhat polished. The antler is cracked/split in places and the internal fine porous bone structure is visible at the broken off end and revealed by the heavy wear on the main tine. Apparently found associ…

Object type: TOOL
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Gwynedd
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Black conical stone found on the bank of the Afon Carrog, near to Collfryn, Bethesda Bach. It may be a naturally-shaped object. The surface of the stone is smooth, and the corners rounded, which although consistent with the action of water on the object, may suggest that it was used as a tool. The larger end of the stone is flattened, and seems to be more polished. Whilst this may be a result of contact with manganese, it also indicates that the stone may have been used for rubbing against another material. It may therefore have been used as a pestle, or a burnishing tool.

Large rounded and elongated pebble bearing similarities to late Mesolithic pebble tools (such as PAS record NMGW-791160, late Mesolithic bevelled pebble). It was found within a garden wall at Gallestra. However, the object is of unusually large size for this type of find, and does not appear to bear definite wear marks at the end, where they would usually be located on this type of find.As such it is likely to be a naturally-formed curiosity collected from the coast in recent times prior to being incorporated into the garden wall (Smith, Pers. Comm., 2010).

Small oval silver pendant. The object is bright silver with some areas of mid grey tarnish. It is perforated at one long end. This perforation is not quite centred on the end but is offset to one side. On one face of the pendant, there is a slight raised lip in the form of a 'D' defining or surrounding this perforation. On this same side, the end with the hole is thickened slightly with a slight irregular edge running horizontally just below the perforation (as suspended). There are also numerous short straight incised lines or scratches on this side several of which run parallel to e…

Tongue shaped piece of lead, thins slightly towards one end. One face is slightly convex, cream coloured and with a rough irregular surface. The other is slightly concave, and a mottled mid grey in colour with occasional patches of cream similar to the other side. The grey surface appears to be an applied layer as the patches occur where it is missing. The surface on this side is highly decorated with raised shapes. Three parallel raised curving lines form a border running around two edges of the piece, finishing with an in-turned end. This appears to be the representation of a long …

Two irregular shaped lumps of copper alloy metal working slag. Frequent small pits are visible in the surface of both lumps but are most prominent on one side of each. The other side of each lump has globular protrusions and occasional larger less defined pits. There is a coating of light green powdery oxidisation (verdigris) over much of the surface of both sides with patches of bright copper coloured metal showing.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Very irregular shaped lump of copper alloy metal-working residue. Very dense, very rough granular surface. Appears to be something that was soft rather than fluid when its shape was formed. Much of the surface is covered in a light green powdery oxidisation layer, but there are flecks of bright silver colour showing where high points have been scraped suggesting some silver content. Under magnification the surface is quite porous with frequent pitting visible. Appears to be the by-product of metal working in the area.

A small thin copper alloy disc, very slightly oval in plan. It is pierced by hole located just off centre and measuring 3.23mm x 2.98mm. One side of the disc appears brassy in colour (possibly gilded?). The edge is rounded (worn) on this face and the surface is slightly concave and irregular but with no discernible pattern. The other face of the disc is pinkish brown in colour with very slight bumps or protrusions covering the surface as if the disc has been hammered on a rough surface. There is a very fine incised line running around most of the circumference of the disc on this side…

Semi-prismatic core. The flint is generally a mid-grey in colour, but one face appears to have developed a slight white patina suggesting this may have been an original 'natural' surface of the flint pebble prior to working. The other face has areas of rusty brown staining which may be iron oxide deposits from the soil. The flint has been subjected to neat, regular single direction flaking in order to produce parallel-sided flakes or blades. Discussion: The core appears to have been designed to produce blades so it is probably Mesolithic or Neolithic in origin. In shape it is ver…

A sub-cuboid lead weight. Five of the weight's faces are flat and plain. The sixth face has a shallow sub-square recess with narrow grooves on its outer edge. The weight may have been suspended by a loop of metal attached at one corner, which is implied by the grooves referred to above. It is not possible to provide a date for the lead weight.
