Object type: JEWS HARP
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Jews harp made of copper alloy. The circular-shaped fragment which forms the top of the jews harp differs from the straighter sided, seventeenth century examples and can therefore be dated to the eighteenth century. The circular-shaped top, or bow, has a lozenge shaped cross-section. The tongue, formed by two narrow strips attached to, and extending out from the bow, is missing. This missing part would have been twanged to produce a sound.

A corroded copper-alloy belt mount or horse harness decoration of probable 17th century AD date. The form of this piece is of interest as it appears to depict the 'Green Man', a common Pagan symbol which is also well represented in medieval and later ecclesiastical contexts. The mount is sub-rectangular in form, having elaborate cast surface detail. At the centre is a male face, with facial features clearly moulded. Foliate decoration is depicted as emanating from the wide open mouth and a similar tri-foliate protrusion extends upwards from the top of the head. Separating the face f…
