Two 19th century brown stoneware jars which have a slip or glaze. They both taper towards the top where there is a shallow rolled lip. One is smaller than the other and the smaller one has lost some of its glaze/slip. These jars were found under the floorboards of a house with a stone carved face see LVPL-554BD1. Noramlly these objects would be too late to record on the PAS database but due to their association with the stone head they have been recorded.

Rim sherd of a thin walled (thick rimmed) Midlands Purple Ware pottery vessel, probably a bowl or storage jar of post medieval date (1600 – 1700). This sherd is relatively fresh with broken edges. The fabric of the sherd is a very hard earthenware with a number of small rounded and sub-angular grit, ironstone, quartz (feldspar) inclusions. There is also a high proportion of mica and sand like grains present in the fabric. The fabric colour is mid grey purple and the inner and outer surfaces of both sherds are a mottled purple grey. Although the sherd has not been glazed there are spo…

The fabric is a relatively hard fired earthenware with a number of small angular and sub-angular grit, quartz, grog and ironstone inclusions. The fabric also has large amounts of mica within it. The fabric colour is a uniform mid orange brown. At least one of the interiors of the sherds has been burnished, producing a fine smooth surface. Not enough of the sherds survive to suggest the size or form of the vessels. The dating of th…

A sub-rectangular fragment of a pottery vessel measuring 52mm by 45mm. This is a self-coloured ware (the colour of the glaze has been taken from the pot) and is a light brown glazed colour. The fabric is light orange and fairly hard. This type of pottery dates to around the 18th century. It is possible that this fragment is from the lid of a vessel.

A sub-rectangular fragment of a pottery vessel measuring 72mm by 54mm. It is a rim fragment of a vessel with the rim being lipped. The outside surface is ribbed and there are the remains of a handle base. It has 3 thumb prints in, it would have been pressed to the vessel in this way. This looks like a North West Purple Ware fragment (due to its colour and material), which dates to the 15th and 16th centuries but the sharpness of the manufacturing, especially the remains of the handle suggest it is later, more like 19th/20th century in date.

A Post Medieval body sherd from a jar or jug. The pale cream clay is high fired with a stoneware like texture. Both externally and internally is a brown colour coat. The outer surface has a fluted decoration, which presumably is likely to be representation of drapery. The diameter of the vessel would have been around 40mm and the weight of the sherd is 11.41g.

A Post Medieval pottery body sherd from a German Stoneware tankard from Siegburg (Schnelle) (AD1550-1600). The fabric is very fine and white with no glaze. The tankard is decorated with a moulded pattern that depicts two robed figures, each figure in a rectangular panel with a foliate border. This example is very similar to no.20 (Gaimster 1997:181) that is described as a cylindrical tankard (Schnelle) tapering slightly to neck. It has a pewter lid with a finial and thumbpiece and the applied panel is dated to 1573 (ibid). The decoration is similar but not identical to this exam…

Body sherd of a salt glazed earthenware pottery vessel probably dating from the post medieval period (1600 – 1700). Not enough of the sherds survives to be certain of the form, without this a more certain date is difficult to ascertain. The fabric of the sherd is a relatively soft earthenware with a number of small angular and sub-angular grit and quartz inclusions. There is also a large amount of mica in the fabric. The fabric colour of the sherd is a mid brown red colour. The glaze on the outer surface is irregular and a green brown colour with an uneven – textured – salt glaze…
