Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Gilded copper-alloy mount from belt or horse-harness. It is flat and made up of two lozengiform lobes joined by a narrower rectangular lobe and with similar rectangular lobes at either end - the effect is of a long rectangle, 39.5 x 6 mm, interrupted by two lozenges. There is relief decoration of two transverse mouldings at either end and one in the middle, and the lozenges each have three rather poorly cast beaded borders around a central boss. On the reverse are three broken-off spikes, one of which shows signs of having been bent over. The spikes are characteristic of an early p…

An incomplete, cast copper alloy, trapezoidal double looped buckle dating to the Post Medieval period (AD 1620 - AD 1680). The frame is broadly trapezoidal, with one edge flaring into two extended arms terminating in expanded lobes and forming an asymmetric design. The outside edge of the frame between the two arms is notched with five indentations forming triangular projections. The shorter outer edge is also notched with three indentations to form two minor lobes. The central strap bar is rounded in cross section and the pin is missing. It measures 38.1mm in length at the flaring en…

Object type: HOOKED TAG
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Published Find published
Incomplete silver hooked tag, gilded on both front and reverse. The plate is rectangular and three-dimensional; in the centre is a large raised (apparently solid) rectangular area with a central circular boss. On the top of the boss is a tiny projection which brings the plate's thickness to 5.5 mm. Around the boss, the raised area is filled with unclear relief decoration, including eight pellets around the edge, within a cabled border. The outer flange is undecorated; around the edge are six projecting knobs, one at each corner (lower left one now missing - fresh break) and one in the…

Catch-piece from a dress fastener made of a silvery metal, probably a lead/tin alloy with a high proportion of tin. The plate is oval, and decorated with three concentric ridges around the edge; the central ridge is beaded. Within the ridges is a complicated and apparently asymmetric relief scrolly ?foliage design. Each of the long sides has a small decorative projecting lug; one of the short sides has a much larger trefoil lug with two pellets and a perforation. Silver head-dress pin. The section is thick and flat with the edges bevelled to form a flat hexagon which smoothly tapers to a sharp point. About halfway up, both faces are decorated with identical engraving; a long triangle, point downwards, then above this a ?double-strand zigzag and then a four-petalled flower with transverse lines above and below. Then comes a rectangular perforation, 11 x 1.5 mm, with a border of dots around; then another quatrefoil and an upwards-pointing V shape. The top of the pin tapers sharply to a low point; this has a small projection coming up out of the …
