Object type: LEAF ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Flint leaf-shaped arrowhead, leaf-shaped in plan and lozenge-shaped in profile and section. The arrow has a rounded proximal end, which would have been hafted on to the arrow shaft, ogival sides and tapers to a fine point at the distal end. There is invasive retouch across the entire surface of the dorsal and ventral faces, and on all margins and at the distal and proximal ends. The colour of the flint is a pale cream, but this may have altered from its original darker colour, due to exposure to heat, sun and frost, which suggests that it was probably derived from a local beach pebble…

Object type: LEAF ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Flint leaf-shaped arrowhead, kite-shaped in plan and lozenge-shaped in profile and section. The dorsal and ventral faces are both invasively retouched throughout, symmetrically from the margins to the midline, though the scars are larger on the ventral face. There is a slight nick in the proximal end of the arrowhead, and this point is slightly off-set, suggesting that this would have been the end that was hafted to the arrow shaft. This damage may have been caused during use, when the arrowhead was forced off the shaft in the past. The flint is a mottled grey-brown in colour, which…

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete Neolithic bifacially worked leaf-shaped flint arrowhead. The arrowhead is 26.93mm in length and 14.75mm wide with an ovate body and triangular tip. Both faces have invasive scaled low-angle retouch. The flint surface is a heavily recorticated white, which suggests deposition within an alkaline environment.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint leaf-shaped arrowhead. Oval in plan, plano-convex in profile and in section. Made on a tertiary flake of dark grey fine-textured translucent nodular flint, with no cortex remaining. A series of conchoidal ripples are clearly visible at the distal end of the ventral face although at the proximal end both the striking platform and the bulb of percussion have been removed by the removal of several small flakes. The pointed tip of the arrowhead has broken off from the distal end. The dorsal face of bears the scars of removal of two earlier flakes. Both lateral margins of the dorsa…

Flint arrowhead, leaf-shaped in plan and lozenge shaped in profile. It appears to be bifacially and invasively retouched. Both distal and proximal tips have been snapped. A leaf arrowhead, dark grey and brown in colour, which has been bi-facially retouched and is a formalised tool Both lateral margins of the dorsal face exhibit continuous retouch of low angle which borders on invasive and possesses a scaled morphology. This retouch is repeated on the ventral face. The tool appears to have been snapped at the left margin and proximal end intersect on the dorsal face. Butler (2005) illustrates a similar example on p133, Fig 5.119, F36 which dates to the Early Neolithic.

A flint leaf-shaped arrowhead, dating from Early to Middle Neolithic - c. 4000 BC to 2700 cal BC The arrow head is a pointed oval shape in plan and has been bifacially worked with invasive, low angled retouch on all margins and beyond towards the medial area of the arrowhead. The flint is a tertiary flake of mottled light to dark grey colour, and was probably knapped from a local beach pebble. Measurements: Length. 36.84mm; Width, 19.55mm; Thickness, 3.63; Weight, 2.7g

A complete  kite-shaped flint leaf arrowhead of probable Early to Middle Neolithic date (c. 4000-2700 BC). It is a tertiary flake as there is no cortex remaining. It is bi-facially worked, showing evidence of covering, scaled, low-angle retouch. It is opaque and is mottled mid-grey in colour. Measurements: Length, 27.96mm; Width, 15.97mm; Thickness, 3.04mm; Weight, 1.32g. Similar leaf-shaped arrowheads have been recorded on the database such as refs. CORN-D2D0DE and SOM-9B9F11.

A thin lenticular section bifacially worked piece of cream flecked grey brown flint. Pressure flaking has covered both sides with flake scars. The plan has bilateral symmetry with a transverse snap. The edge is nearly straight and the arrowhead may have snapped in use or at very close to completion whilist trying to remove a long flake. The pointed end is missing leaving the base of what would have been a pair shaped leaf arrowhead. Other leafs and transverse types are found nearby.

A thin lenticular section bifacially worked leaf-shaped arrowhead of cream flecked grey-brown flint. Pressure flaking has partly covered both sides with flake scars. However a lot of the ventral side of the flake blank remains as do some of a pair of original dorsal scars. The edge is finished and nearly straight but the side view is almost banana shaped in profile as the knapper has had to fight the natural shape of a struck flake and not done enough to totally remove its form. The arrowhead is complete and of a pleasing symmetrical leaf shape. It appears that it was surplus and not s…

A thin lenticular section bifacially worked leaf-shaped arrowhead of cream and very light grey-brown flint. Pressure flaking has partly covered both sides with flake scars. However a lot of the ventral side of the flake blank remains as does the dorsal surface which interestingly is the completely ground finish of an axe .The edge is straight with several simple bold notches towards the butt, perhaps to aid hafting. The leaf tip is completed with a flourish and is convex on one side and concave on the other in plan; much like a real leaf. Less than 30 metres away another flake fom a l…
