Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper-alloy late Iron Age to early Roman brooch, probably of strip bow type, c. 1st century AD. The wings, neck and part of the bow are complete. It would appear the bow has broken off halfway down, and the footend, catchplate, hinge and pin are all missing. The pin would have been hinged in the narrow tube formed at the top of the bow, which was rolled backwards; the bow is a broad reeded sub-rectangular strip, which probably flared slightly near the foot although that portion is now missing. The brooch has a nearly flat profile below the slight angle at its head…

A lead ingot, of probable Roman date. It is roughly in the form of a trapezium in plan, with maximum dimensions of 134 by 103mm, and the thickness varies from to 12 to 35mm. One face is relatively smooth, but the other is much rougher and is quite pitted. It weighs 2.4 kg, and all surfaces are thickly covered in cream/white patina. This could date from any period from Roman to post Medieval, but it was found near to a known Roman site, and the degree of patination would suggest an early date, so the likelihood is that it is Roman.
