A pair of finds composed of a long cross penny and a decorative silver mount of probable Medieval date (AD 1344-1400).The finder suggests that the coin was found within the silver mount.
The coin is heavily clipped and abraded. Most probably a coin of Edward III spanning the Florin, Transition and Post-treaty coinage (AD 1344-1377). Long cross reverse with quatrefoil and pellet centrally and three pellets in each quadrant. York mint.

These are a group of 4 silver pennies of the Short Cross coinage, a type used for about 80 years though 4 reigns. Their details allow them to be dated more precisely, as set out below. As official English pennies they will have a silver standard of over 90% fine metal. They would have been in currency together in the years around 1210 and it is likely that they represent a single deposit. In the 13th century cut halfs and quarters of Short Cross pennies usually outnumber full pennies in areas of individual coin losses, and a collection of full pennies alone is more likely to represent…

A total of 12 coins, consisting of Viking, Saxon and Arabic issues, found between 1992 and 2000. Only 3 were found together and considered Treasure, the others were single finds. When viewed together the coins obviously constituted an important mixed coin hoard, the most southerly yet found, deposited around 923-925.
"Their presence shows that a bullion economy still operated in some sections of society in the Danelaw as late as the 920's. What is still more significant is that this hoard should have been deposited so close to Leicester, five or more years after control of the town…
