Pottery Sherd of Staffordshire Slipware, probably from close to the edge of a plate or platter. Off-white fabric bears creamy yellow base glaze with dark brown decoration, on one side only - reverse is unglazed. The sherd bears a motif of vertical lines –or possibly lettering – between two zones of marbling. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1750. Finder’s reference: This sherd was found 46 years ago (i.e. 1964) in a field outside the village, around the time of the finder’s marriage, and was retained as a keepsake.

An incomplete post-Medieval ceramic skillet (c. 1550-c. 1700). This shallow vessel has a complete solid handle, circular in cross-section, with a circular button-like terminal. Flanked on either side of the handle, where it joins the body of the vessel, there is a thumb or finger impression. The inner olive green glazed face has a rectangular depression in line with the handle. The fabric has a high sand content and is yellowish red (Munsell Color: 5YR 5/6). Small fragment of Surry white ware pottery dating to the 16th century. It is sub-rectangular in plan and rectangular in section. The fragment has a slight curve. The internal fabric is a mid-white and has no visible inclusions. The outer fabric has a smooth mid-grey patina and is unglazed.

A Post Medieval almost complete pottery vessel, a Raeren stoneware oil pot (16th century). The pot has a glossy mottled grey glaze with brown patches outside. The pot has a plain rim with a slight cordon on the neck; two opposing small pierced vertical roughly finished lugs; an ovoid body and splayed flat base. There is a stacking scar on the body and there is some modern damage to the edges. A similar vessel is illustrated in Hurst, Neal and van Beuningen (1986:197-8 no.94.308) which is identified as an oil pot from the 16th century. The authors note the oil would have been …

Twenty seven sherds of glazed slipware pottery dating from the period 1650 – 1720. The sherds come from two large slipware platters or chargers / plates with raised applied decoration. Significant proportions of both survive; these are relatively unabraded and the breaks are fresh. This suggests they have come from a midden deposit related to the nearby post medieval hall The fabric of the pottery in both dishes is similar being very hard with a number of sub-angular, grit, and mica inclusions.
