Lead weight. Cast flat discoid weight; patinated, with deep and recent gouge on one edge. The mass may suggest this to have represented two averdepois ounces. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1800 Diameter: 38.2mm, Thickness: 4.9mm, Weight: 54.93gms

Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Wakefield
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead probable weight. Cut fragment, probably from a cast flat sided discoid weight, of which this is about one third. Patinated overall. The mass may suggest this to represent six Viking Age Scandinavian units (of 4.07gms) for the measurement of silver bullion; the mass of this object also coincides approximately with a Viking ounce known as an ora or ore. The subdivision of larger weights intended for use with this system is occasionally reported. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 850-950. Length: 23.2mm, Width: 14.3mm, Thickness: 10.3mm, Weight: 23.57gms.

Lead weight. Cast cylindrical weight with a possibly drilled aperture in its base. The base is slightly recessed from shrinkage when the object was cast in an open mould; patinated. The mass may suggest this to represent six [slightly overweight] Viking Age units of 4.07gms, or one overweight ora/ore, the contemporary equivalent of the ounce. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 850-950. Diameter: 16.7mm, Height: 15.0mm, Weight: 25.34gms

Lead possible weight fragment. Cast weight with an upstanding rim which takes the thickness where it occurs to c.9mm, broken with the loss of one side or end; patinated. A pair of deep triangular gouges on the flat underside may be a deliberate marking. It is uncertain whether the original form was sub-rectangular or discoid, the latter being more common. The uncertain extent of loss vitiates any correspondence with known or suspected standards. Suggested date: Unknown, 43-1750. Length: 36.2mm, Width: 38.8mm, Thickness (clear of rim): 8mm, Weight: 65.91gms

Copper alloy weight. Cast discoid rimmed weight from a nesting set, with a pit in its base suggesting finishing on a lathe. The upper, concave, side bears a circular stamp which may suggest the weight had been checked. Its mass does not immediately suggest correspondence with systems of weights current in the post-medieval period, though it comes close to a value of 10 scruples of 1.29gms according to the Apothecaries' system of 1400 and thereafter (Egan 1998, table 14). Lead weight. Cast discoid weight with a slightly sunken surface on one side, possibly from manufacture in an open mould. Dented and patinated. Weights of this form and mass from London do not include any equivalent to this, but the mass here may suggest the object represents twelve [slightly overweight] pennyweight under the English troy system introduced from the 1350s or 1370s (Egan 1998, table 14 - the cited value is 18.70gms). Copper alloy weight. Cast discoid weight with a low upstanding bevelled rim, probably from a nesting set. A circumferential line on the concave side and a central pit may both suggest the object to have been finished on a lathe. On the same surface, a pair of juxtaposed marks, each with a pit at one end of a line, might refer to either value or checking. A further stamped device, resembling a vessel with broad base and spout, may indicate official checking. The system the weight observes is uncertain, though its mass equates to just over seven drachms under the averdepois system. Sugg…

Copper alloy watch winder. A probably die-stamped winding key, with a circular round-section loop with opposed lugs: one a stepped winding key. A larger [diameter 22mm] ring of composite construction retaining some of its original tensile strength passes through the central loop of the key, and itself has a small [now] open ring threaded onto it. This appears to represent the repair, and ultimately the loss or discard, of a watch winder's attachment to a fob chain. Here, though in appearance only, it resembles the mouthpiece of a whistle. Patinated. It seems likely the flat lug may have continued for some length, and the studded collar at the surviving terminal may hint at a mechanical function involving engagement with other components, perhaps as a spindle. The loop has a central aperture of diameter 7.7mm. The loop is dished by wear on one side and flat on the other, suggesting a spindle passed through it and rotated when the object was in use, so positioned as to inflict only unilateral wear. Lead spindle whorl. Cast biconvex whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 10mm. Each side bears moulded decoration comprising radial lines dividing them into seven rhomboid compartments, each containing three pellets. A prominent plain circumferential rim projects where the two halves of the whorl meet, and there are also flat plain zones framing the aperture on either side. The decorative scheme of lines and pellets, though common for whorls of this form, is unusually coherent in this case. Lead possible shot. Cast object, originally spherical but now with multiple angular facets. This pattern of damage may be characteristic of a shot included in a charge of grape shot or canister shot, which would both spread from the muzzle of a field gun like shotgun pellets; the early part of the journey of shot down gun barrel would entail multiple collisions with other shot and the barrel itself. The mass would be apt to a military pistol or carbine. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1630-1830. Diameter: 14.1mm, Weight: 15.95gms.
