Iron knife fragment. Wrought Iron leaf-shaped or oval plate of V section with a pointed end and a flat, probably broken, end where the tang would have continued. This is considered to be the blade from a whittle tang knife. Corroded and bent nearly in half. Though the form is known from through the Roman to Medieval periods, it is probably most common at the earlier part of that date range. Suggested date: Possibly Roman, 40-400. Copper alloy insole. A sheet metal plate of nearly straight-sided form with rounded ends, and retaining the marks from the heads [5.5mm diameter ] of two small nails on either side at one end, probably the heel. The finder kindly suggests this may be an insole from a work boot. The form is indeed comparable to that of work boot soles going back to medieval times. As the finder's suggestion is informed by family experience [as this reporter understands it] a modern date is suggested. Suggested date: Modern, 1900-1930.
