Silver coin. Penny of Offa of Mercia (757-796), as kindly identified by the finder. The obverse is unusual for the division of the royal name, which more usually appears on a single line (cf. North 1994 plate 4, nos 24-26). Obverse description: Legend over two lines separated by a pelleted line, with initial cross and longer shafted cross on its side below legend.
