Record ID: NLM-66EC01
Object type: TUNING PEG
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy possible tuning peg fragment. Cast oval or kidney shaped bow and the end of a round section shank resembling components of a small rotary key; the 'stem' is broken at a deep groove. This is considered to mark the site where an instrument string would be wrapped around a tuning peg. The lack of green corrosion may tend to argue a fairly recent date. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1900. Length: 26.2mm, Height: 19.2mm, Diameter (stem): 5.9mm, Weight: 3.39gms.

Copper alloy possible tuning peg. Cast pin with a flattened sub-spherical head with a flattened top which has a circumferential ring of pale material apparently inset. One side of the head bears a cavity of diameter 10.4mm and depth c.5mm with white material within. A moulded collar separates the head from a slightly tapered four-sided shank, now of length 10.5mm, which has lost its extreme tip. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1650-1850. Length: 21.1mm, Diameter (head): 11.0mm, Weight: 4.96gms.

Copper alloy possible tuning peg. Cast rod of sub-rectangular section with one end slightly expanded while diminishing in its thickness; the other end tapering slightly, possibly with grooving from wear towards its end. If this identification were sustained, it would imply that the instrument string was looped around the peg rather than passing through it. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1600. Length: 56.2mm, Width: 8.5mm, Thickness: 4.7mm, Weight: 7.88gms.

Copper alloy possible tuning peg. A slightly tapered round section pin with screw thread or grooves running around it, more heavily worn on one side. An integrally cast thin [1mm] expanded plate with a curved top is set at the broad end of the pin, and was probably sandwiched between plates of bone or ivory which would have lain flush with the top of the pin. According to the interpretation suggested, the plate would be used as a finger-grip to adjust the tension of musical instrument strings. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1850. Length: 27.7mm, Diameter (pin): 3.5mm, Width (h…

Copper alloy probable tuning peg. Cast pin with a spherical head and, below a thicker [diameter 3.6mm diameter] initial extent of the shank, with a double collar separating this from a short tapered extent whose tip is lost. A ring is incised, probably with a machine, on opposite sides of the spherical head, and the head is flattened within the ring in one of the two. Further machined lines appear at the base of the head and between the ribs of the collar. A tiny knop appears on top of the head. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1800-1900. Copper alloy possible Tuning Peg fragment. Cast oval lightly concavo-convex plate with a feathered pattern of grooves on its convex face, perhaps to afford grip. The peg is thickened at the base of the plate but is then sharply narrowed or constricted, possibly either worn by or to retain an instrument string, and is broken in this area. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1650. Length: 24.8mm, Width: 11.8mm, Thickness: 5.0mm, Weight: 4.26gms.

Copper alloy possible tuning peg fragment. Cast pin with a sub-spherical head with a ridge and knop on its top and a basal collar below, above the stub of a tapered square-section shank now of length 7.5mm. A drilled hole of diameter 5mm and depth 6mm appears on one side of the head, and may be intended to receive a key permitting the peg to be adjusted while the object remained in place and under tension. This could apply had the pin been used to adjust some other mechanism entirely. The neat head may have been finished on a lathe. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1800-1900 Length: …

Iron possible tuning key. An iron object thickly sheathed with white metal plating, probably to retard its corrosion or to prevent rust staining its setting. A probably rectangular shank is expanded to form a handle of oval form with opposed crescentic indentations. Possibly damaged by heat on one flat side, with resultant exposure of the ferrous metal core. Shank broken below the putative handle. Wrought iron would have the strength for the suggested function, though other metals might be cast to shape more effectively and easily than iron. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800 …

Copper alloy possible tuning peg. Cast D-shaped handle at the end of a slightly tapered shank with two circumferential grooves around its base. If from a musical instrument, the horizontal scarring of the shank may hint at one fitted with steel strings. However, slightly larger objects of similar form are associated with the regulation of domestic gas supply to appliances. Copper alloy possible tuning peg. Trefoil-shaped cast flat plate with an apical knop, with projecting spurs below bevelled on one side, separating the handle from a short cylindrical tapered shank with three bands of screw thread, possibly from the steel strings of an instrument. Painted black on one side. This semi-gloss surface might point to an alternative identification as a gas supply tap handle. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1800-1900.
