Copper alloy
Toggle (identified by finder). A strip cut from thick metal sheet, with expanded ends joined by a shank or stem of rectangular section. The curving ends may suggest this object was cut down from a disc. The shape resembles a ship's anchor, and is also oddly reminiscent of the pagan Thor's Hammer motif. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1800.

Fragment of Copper alloy looped fastener. Cast toggle of 'dumb-bell' form, flattened on reverse where two hollows and a slot between them suggest loss of a separate loop. Abraded overall. This adaptation of a later Iron Age form of toggle to serve as a looped fastener, and its crude moulding, suggest a Romano-British object drawing on native design. Suggested date: 2nd-century. The inside edge of the terminals have a grooved collar. The length is 19.2mm, the diameter of the terminals is 12.4mm and the weight is 12.28g.

A cast copper-alloy Romano-Celtic toggle. The trefoil-shaped toggle consists of three flat back spheres, which are attached to a central pyramid. On the back of the toggle is a D-shaped loop which is integrally cast between two of the spheres. The diameter of each sphere is around 9.2mm, the overall length is 18.2mm, the width is 18.2mm and the weight is 9.58g.
The only other toggle to come from the same site was quite similar to this one. However, instead of the three flat backed spheres it had two three-dimensional spheres.

Copper alloy toggle. Cast dumbbell button comprising two unequally sized and elongated spheres linked at a central waist. The re may have been a collar between the spheres, though only a slight groove now remains at the base of one of them. Copper alloy toggle, as kindly identified by the finder. A massy cast sub-spherical bead with four low ridges following the curve of its larger lower part, and with an integral loop for attachment. The interior of the body is hollow, which may have facilitated use as a dress fastener. One side has a flat area limited by the uppermost ridge which would have provided an apt field for enamel decoration. The finder kindly suggests an Iron Age date. While the dominant curve recalls Iron Age styles and the object may well have been made in a native tradition, the ribbed decoration is perhap…

Copper alloy probable toggle. A small thick cruciform casting of plano-convex section, with a large [diameters of 8.7mm to 9.7mm] sub-spherical terminal to each of its arms, perhaps as a compressed type of cross pommee. One of the terminals is larger than the others, so this might hint at its representing the head of a cross, and that sphere opposite has a slight basal ridge. Abraded. The use of simple rounded forms is characteristic of dumbbell buttons or toggles of late Iron Age to Early Roman date, and it is perhaps these that this object most closely resembles. Cheek Piece, toggle or slider fragment. Cast waisted cylindrical shaft, with one side of its slotted continuation remaining. The slot was in excess of 16mm long and circa 8mm wide. Decorative triangular recesses appear at either end of the less complete side, that closest to the slot being supplemented by a line of six crudely incised triangles within incised borders.
