Record ID: NLM-45FE04
Object type: SURGICAL INSTRUMENT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Nottinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy possible surgical implement. Cast elongated scoop, of flattened concavo-convex U profile with a tang or stem of sub-rectangular section, probably rounded by wear. Bent at the middle part of the scoop, possibly the result of post-depositional damage. This may be for either medical or veterinary purposes; the latter would perhaps commend a more recent date in the rural context of the find spot. Suggested date: possibly Roman, 43-410. Length: 129mm, Width: 19.4mm, Thickness (scoop): 2.8mm, Weight: 49.10gms.

Broad period: ROMAN
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy possible surgical implement fragment. Cast oval section rod with a facetted rhomboid terminal at one end, separated from the rest by a doubled collar moulding. A further double moulding limits a plain zone, with a zone of elongated triangular facets beyond it; the object is broken at a further double collar moulding, where its section approaches a flat-sided sub-rectangular form. The mouldings may be cut using a lathe, as that at the widest part of the object appears to have 'slipped', which could not occur with moulded decoration. An alternative identification as a stylu…

Object type: SURGICAL INSTRUMENT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy possible surgical implement. A cast blade of elongated sub-triangular form, resembling one side of a pair of tweezers, thinned at its broader end and thickened as it narrows, terminating at a small sharp curved rhomboid point. The pointed end might have served as a scoop or pick, though it is now dangerously sharp for this to be attempted. The broader 'tweezer' blade may have had a counterpart, though again, how attached is now unclear. Traces of white metal plating appear on one side of the object. Now bent or curled and approaching an S shape in profile. Suggested date:…

Copper alloy possible surgical implement. A flat shank expanded to spatulate straight-ended form at one end, and with a lesser rounded expansion at the other. Robustly cleaned by the finder. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410 Length: 70.2mm, Width: 9.3mm, Thickness: 1.3mm, Weight: 2.65gms

County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy surgical implement. A short cast and barley-sugar twisted rod, expanded at its ends: one is a small triangular spatula, and the other the relict of a probably smaller ear scoop. Now bent in the middle. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410 Length (as found): 32.5mm, Width: 7.5mm, Thickness (stem): 1.9mm, Weight: 2.63gms

Object type: SURGICAL INSTRUMENT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy possible surgical implement. A thin tube made by rolling sheet metal of thickness 1mm, tapered to form a wedge-shaped point at one end, perhaps functioning as a probe. At the other end, a neat rectangular flap protrudes, integral to the sheet metal. A longitudinal butted seam is aligned with this flap, and its course can be traced nearly as far as the putative point. The imaginative use of rolled sheet metal is probably a Roman rather than a later method of construction. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410 Length: 74.8mm, Diameter: 4.8mm, Width (at flap): 11.6mm, Weight: 5.94gms

Broad period: ROMAN
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy surgical implement. Cast rectangular section rod, expanding in its width towards a probably hammered narrow blade approaching a V-section, though with a slight longitudinal concavity at the blade, probably serving as a surgical knife or fleam. The unbeaten part of the object probably served as a whittle tang inserted into a handle [now lost] of a different material. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410. Length: 53.5mm, Width: 6.8mm, Thickness: 2.4mm, Weight: 2.94gms.

Record ID: NLM-7DF8BB
Object type: SURGICAL INSTRUMENT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy possible surgical instrument. Cast shank of round section with a short [14mm] flattened or expanded section towards its midpoint. Now bent into a loop. There is the suspicion of a graduated thickness to the shank, though this may be the result of corrosion and flaking of a patinated surface. As the object now survives, there appears to be one pointed end and one broken end, the two now adjacent. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410. Length (as found): 50.5mm, Diameter: 3.1mm, Width (expanded part): 5.3mm, Weight: 4.24gms

Object type: SURGICAL INSTRUMENT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy possible surgical implement. A straight-sided strip, tapered to a rounded point which has been thinned and sharpened by wear at one end, and sharply kinked at the other where it is broken. Patches of white metal plating appear along the flattened and worn edges towards the point, including, on one side only, in a rectilinear strip noted by the finder. The kink at the other end might be apt to a fragment from a pair of tweezers, but could equally mark that damage, when so ever inflicted, and deliberately or not, which reduced the object to its current state. White metal pl…

Object type: SURGICAL INSTRUMENT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy possible surgical implement. A cast square section tapered shank, bent sharply [?by plough strike?] at its broader end, and expanded very slightly at its flattened tip, which forms a round-ended spatulate blade. This resembles a post-medieval nail fragment, but the terminal would not have survived use as such and is so neatly formed as to suggest deliberate manufacture in this form; there is also a fine dark patina overall - except at the broken end. Suggested date: possibly Roman, 43-410 Length: 56.5mm, Width: 4.7mm, Thickness: 4.7mm, Weight: 8.18gms
