Lead, with iron loop
Possible Steelyard Weight fragment. A now-irregular flat-topped cast weight, with an apical iron pin perhaps representing the stub of a suspension loop. Though now heavily damaged, it is possible the original form of the weight was pyramidal with fluted edges or arises. In this it resembles a 'squashed wheel' design of a little over half the same weight, which is described amongst others thought to have been used for checking payments in silver. The weight of this example is close to half a mark, though this relationship may be misleading because of both d…

Roman lead steelyard weight. Cast circular weight, of a flattened tear-drop form which rises to presumed position of an apical suspension loop (now lost). Lead
Probable Steelyard Weight. Cast plano-convex weight with central longitudinal aperture of diameter 7mm. On the flat base of the object a circular indentation of diameter 16.5mm and depth 2mm surrounds this hole.
A recent encounter with Late Roman re-enactors prompts this reporter to note that this object would also make a good weight for a plumbata or weighted dart of Late Roman type; were this identification to be sustained, the basal indentation would accommodate the end of a short flighted shaft, and the longitudinal hole the shank of a barbed and tanged point. However, th…

Lead and iron steelyard weight. Cast conical weight with an iron suspension loop at the top. There are eight equidistantly spaced ribs moulded in relief, converging at the apex of the weight. Patinated overall. Though the object is equipped to serve as a suspended weight its flat base would permit use in a scale pan balance as well. The mass may suggest it could have represented an underweight four unciae or one quarter Roman libra if used in that way. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410.

Lead and Iron steelyard weight. Cast biconvex weight with stubs of iron suspension loops protruding from both its ends. The form is usually considered as Roman, and the beam balance is thought to have been lost in Britain between the end of the Roman period and the later medieval period when it was reintroduced from the continent. This is qualified by an apparent dearth of diagnostically Roman finds reported along with this object. Suggested date: Probably Roman, 40-400.

Lead and iron probable steelyard weight. Cast cylindrical weight with an inserted iron loop projecting 8mm from the top and with a bevelled base. The steelyard weight was a common form in the Roman period, but is thought to have been lost in England until its reintroduction from Europe in the later Middle Ages. The flat base of this object means that it might also have been used as a standing weight. If the latter usage is envisaged, this might have represented an underweight 'Tower pound', a unit equivalent to 240 silver pennies, but also used for bread. The inaccuracy of this weight…

Lead and iron steelyard weight. Cast sub-spherical weight with an embedded iron loop of rectangular section [of thickness 8mm] with one end protruding from the opposite side - though its angular section might be acquired through the flaking of corrosion, the surface of the iron appears atypically sound. Lead steelyard weight fragment. Cast globular weight with a tapered central aperture of diameter 6.5-3.5mm. The surface is slashed and gouged and patinated overall; it appears likely that much of this surface damage was incurred in antiquity. Though there is provision for a suspension loop to be fitted, there is no trace of rust staining so if a loop was attached it was probably removed before the object was deposited, possibly incurring surface damage in the process. Some other gouges are of recent origin. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410.

This, and perhaps any other lost elements, would presumably have secured an iron suspension hook and its shank; the absence of these and any trace of rust may suggest the object was dismantled before its deposition.
