Flint, mid-grey translucent Good quality flint flake with a small bulb of percussion at one end, small patches of cortex at both ends, and a long blade-removal scar, and further flake removal scars parallel to it between these ends. The latter two edges have been finely reworked by pressure-flaking to produce parallel saw blades, which remain functionally sharp. Suggested date: early Neolithic. Length: 56.19mm, Width: 17.82mm, thickness: 7.11mm.

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Pale grey translucent Flint of high quality. Flint saw fragment. Knapped sub-triangular flake bearing three long parallel flake removal scars on its dorsal aspect. One end is broken, probably recently, and one side edge bears fine tiny pressure flaked denticulations forming a serrated cutting blade. The selection of excellent material and its assured working suggest an Early Neolithic date, while its fresh condition hints at recent disturbance from a sealed context. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC. Length: 19mm, Width: 18.4mm, Thickness: 4.2mm, Weight: 1.51gms.

Record ID: NLM-17DE76
Object type: SAW
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Grey translucent flint of high quality. Flint saw. Long flake of triangular section and curved in profile produced by the removal of two long flakes from its dorsal aspect and the subsequent detaching of flake from core. Retouch includes the very fine pressure flaked denticulation of both long edges of the flake to create finely serrated edges. To permit its use, the blade may have been hafted; its strenuous use would seem difficult with the opposed edges simultaneously sharp. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC. Length: 28mm, Width: 8.6mm, Thickness: 3.1mm, Weight: 0.82gms.

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Dark grey-brown flint of good quality, with slight cloudy patina on the dorsal side only, saw. Flake with parallel flakes removed from the dorsal sider and faint ripples across the ventral. One edge bears very fine serrations, better felt than seen, executed by very short retouch executed from the dorsal side. Broken and battered at both ends, probably deliberately as the object fits well between finger and thumb. The material resembles that of NLM-1CE34B. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC. Length: 23.5mm, Width: 25.7mm, Thickness: 7.3mm, Weight: 5.18gms.

Dark grey semi-translucent flint of good quality saw. Flake with broad parallel flake removal scars on its dorsal side and a bulb on the ventral, all from unidirectional working, and with one finely serrated edge, more easily felt than seen, along one curving side, the latter executed as very short abrupt retouch from the dorsal aspect. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC. Length: 32.1mm, Width: 16.6mm, Thickness: 4.8mm, Weight: 2.43gms.

Record ID: NLM-FEE5D1
Object type: SAW
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: North East Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Dark mottled brown Flint of good quality, saw. Long plano-convex flake with long parallel flake removal scars on its convex dorsal aspect, a bulb of percussion at one end on the ventral aspect where the flake was removed from core. Fine pressure flaked retouch, mainly executed from the dorsal aspect, extends almost all round the flake, conferring a very finely serrated edge. The quality of both the material selected and its working, especially the controlled removal of long flakes, suggests an Early Neolithic date. The recent re-dating of the Early Neolithic to 4000-3500 BC may accomm…

Grey semi-translucent Flint of high quality. Saw. Flake with long hard hammer flake removal scars across all of the dorsal aspect, and with a marked bulb of percussion on the ventral aspect where it has been removed from the core. Subsequent working was probably pressure flaking around the edges executed from the dorsal aspect. This is part of a small group of objects of apparently similar function - perhaps the cutting of skin or sinew - reported from the same location, perhaps elements of a specialist tool kit lost together. This suggests the group deserves to be considered as a fin…

Dark mottled brown Flint of good quality, cf. NLM-FEE5D1 Saw, of sub-triangular plano-convex section along its blade, which is broken at one end, probably in antiquity and possibly deliberately. A long flake bears two long flake removal scars on its dorsal aspect, and a very pronounced bulb of percussion on the ventral side at its wider end. The 'bulb' describes a forty-five degree angled turn, giving a heavier handle end to the tool. The removal of a further long flake parallel to the flakes removed from the dorsal aspect gives a flat back as one edge, and would serve as finger …

Iron saw blade fragment. Flat ferrous metal blade fragment with a serrated cutting edge with three teeth per centimetre, now much worn. The blade narrows towards one end, with the beginning of a curve as the upper and lower edges converge. A stamped brand mark on one side of the blade incorporates a central motif comprising an open crosshatched motif framed by vegetal fronds, and with larger fronds curving away to [presuming a balanced composition] either side. The back of the blade is rounded or smoothed by wear. Broken at both ends. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1850-1900. Lengt…

Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Opaque grey flint with cortex, saw. Knapped flint with a residual bulb of percussion at its narrower end, and cortex retained at the other end. Between these points, cursory but skillfull knapping has produced a curving triangular section blade with, at the cortex end, a smooth thumb rest. The two longest edges of the blade are finely serrated by very delicate working, perhaps pressure flaking and apparently executed from one side only; the third edge is flattened. Though appearing roughly made, this tool retains its cutting edges in excellent condition which might suggest its recent …

White flint Saw fragment. Knapped flint flake with three long blade removal scars and very fine serrations along one of its long edges; these are possibly formed by pressure flaking within the narrowest of the blade removal scars. Broken at one end, patimated overall. The skilful working indicates a Neolithic date. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 3500-2900 BC. Length: 23.7mm, Width: 11.8mm, Thickness: 2.6mm, Weight: 0.87gms.
