Cast copper alloy pommel cap (?), hollow, slipper shaped with a flat plate extending from edge. This has a denticulate edge and through it were three holes though which it was attached to the saddle's wooden frame. There are signs of wear on back. While these objects are conventionally seen as being part of post Medieval saddles direct evidence is lacking. However, while the 16th century saddle from London (Egan 2005, Material Culture in an Age of Transition, 181-3) lacks a pommel cap it does have a narrow, raised pommel and a fitting of this type would not be inappropriate. The original identification of this object was as a sword pommel, and the description read "Very elaborate pommel with incised decoration and very long". Rob Webley (Hampshire FLO) has subsequently identified it as a saddle decoration of c. 1900, as shown in Bailey 1992, 82.

Copper alloy saddle pommel, as kindly identified by Teresa Gilmore. Teresa compares it to https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/1066898. A cast hollow container with deeply fluted exterior, one rounded closed end and two drilled holes of 3mm diameter with a smaller hole between them at the edge of its open end. The form approaches an ovoid, with the diameter narrower at the open end than near the midpoint of the object. A curved fracture suggest the loss of part of the upper wall [as illustrated]. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1700 Length: 53.3mm, Diameter …
