An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman razor handle. The handle is sub-triangular in plan and has an open attachment end, which is covered with iron corrosion and has the remains of an iron blade inside. The attachment end has a U-shaped aperture and one edge of the attachment end is truncated. The blade was secure with one rivet hole, which is completely covered with iron corrosion. The handle terminates with a flat upside down zoomorphic griffin head, which is bowed slightly downwards and bends at a right angle to the handle. The same design is on both sides of the handle and the bas…

Copper alloy Razor Handle. Cast zoomorphic terminal representing the beaked head of a gryphon, rendered in naturalistic(?) three-dimensional style with almond-shaped eyes and ears that protrude from the curls of what appear to be rams horns; a deep groove runs beneath what may be a lower jaw or - more likely for a beaked beast - a neck ruff. A flat plate of thickness 2.7mm, projects from the back of the head, and is all that remains of elements clasping an iron blade. The object is broken close to the junction of handle and plates. Suggested date: Later Roman, 200-400. Length: 34.…

County: Lincolnshire

Copper alloy probable razor. Cast lentoid blade with one oval end of lentoid section and broken at the other, probably in antiquity. A flattened or rubbed down mid rib appears on both sides, which might hint that this object was made by trimming down a fragment of a larger and heavier blade. The cutting edges are abraded and frayed, probably as post-depositional damage to an already delicate object thinned by recurrent sharpening. Suggested date: possibly Late Bronze Age, 1000-800 BC. Length: 47.6mm, Width: 23.2mm, Thickness: 2.3mm, Weight: 10.21gms.

Copper alloy possible razor fragment. Cast fragment of a curved or lunate blade with a projection at its remaining end, possibly for a separate handle. The section of the blade is slightly V-s, and it is angled by sharpening along its cutting edge. Abraded. Suggested date: Late Iron Age, 100 BC-AD42. Copper alloy possible razor fragment. Cast triangular section object with two angled surfaces meeting at a straight aris and a cutting edge which curves at one end to meet a straight back, which is indented, probably by fortuitous damage. The flat back may suggest the object to have been cast in an open mould. The form of the section and the lower side as cast appear to represent a skeuomorphic imitation of a flint tool, which might suggest a date in the earlier part of the proposed range. However, the use of metal for a relatively secular purpose would presuppose its wider availabili…

Copper alloy razor. A flat blade of elongated spade shape with an integral sub-rectangular tang. The object is probably cast, though thinned by sharpening. The cutting edges are slightly curved, as are or were - two being slightly damaged - the angles at the outer edges of blade and tang. The object is flat in section, though if the blade is held between finger and thumb there is a tactile impression of slight thinning towards the edge. The form closely resembles that of NLM-EF1AB4, which is identified as a Middle Bronze Age razor of Piggott Class 1. Suggested date: Middle Bronze Age,…

Copper alloy probable razor. Cast U-shaped plate with a cutting edge which runs along one long edge and continuing along the short straight side; the other long side and the U shaped end are flattened. The section is of extremely flattened lentoid form, a point which is only apparent if it is viewed against a straight edge. This object was initially considered as a sword blade fragment, but it lacks any convincing strengthening of the middle part of the blade, and a single sided form would be unusual for a rapier. This object appears to have been robustly cleaned by the finder. Suggest…

County: North Lincolnshire

Copper alloy possible razor. Sub-triangular blade with a straight flat back and a blade now tapering to a point, possibly because of recurrent sharpening. Towards the other end of the blade it now narrows, though this is possibly the result of damage in antiquity; it has a straight and possibly original end here. This object appears to have been robustly cleaned by the finder. Suggested date: Possibly Roman, 43-410. Length: 56.7mm, Width: 11.6mm, Thickness: 1.4mm, Weight: 4.17gms.

Copper alloy possible razor fragment. Possibly the tip of a small leaf-shaped V-section blade, though the slight expansion at the neatly angled wider end might hint at the object being a complete miniature. Copper alloy possible safety razor fragment. A die-stamped plate with a T-shaped bar with three drilled holes of diameter 2.2mm set equidistantly along it, this projecting from a wider rectangular plate with a serrated outer edge, and with lugs at either end permitting it to pivot. Bent. An alternative function related to pastry-cutting might be entertained; the key diagnostic feature being the provision for the object to pivot in a frame with its serrated edge outermost. Suggested date: Modern, 1900-1930. Width (as found): 22.5mm, Length: 15.7mm, Thickness: 1.3mm, Weight: 2.53gms

Copper alloy possible razor fragment. Cast end of a small blade of probably lunate form, thickest [c.2mm] on its upper side and thinner [c.1.5mm] at the putative cutting edge, though a clear V section is not discerned. Abraded. Copper alloy razor. Cast zoomorphic handle for a razor. The modelling appears in better condition - perhaps through differential wear in use - on one side; the other side is stepped, with traces of ferrous corrosion in the lower thinner part which has a curving edge where an iron blade has been lost. That face in better condition now gives the impression of a naturalistically rendered dog or wolf in profile, with a border below; viewed edge-on it has rather the look of a horse's head, while from the other side the aspect is feline. The beast intended is probably a gryphon. Suggested d…

Copper alloy razor handle, as kindly identified by the finder with reference to GLO-443DF8. Cast model of a lower leg with a large sandalled foot at right angles to it, with two garters or straps passing round the calf of the leg. The strapping and broad sole represented on the sandal might pass muster as of Roman style, and initially suggested this to be a votive model of a limb, broken across the upper calf. The new and current identification may be confirmed by relict rust in the top of the leg, which was missed by this reporter on first viewing. This object might also include …
