Lead possible powder flask cap. Scrap of cast sheet of thickness 1.4mm rolled into a tubular form with one end folded over to form a flat end with a seam; the splayed state of its other end may indicate it was roughly removed from the flask it sealed. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800. Length: 27.3mm, Width: 17.6mm, Thickness: 8.3mm, Weight: 7.47gms.

Possible powder flask. Cast spherical vessel resembling a one-piece spherical bell in its construction. A body of two hemispheres meeting at an external rib, probably as a one piece casting, is equipped with a short waisted spout at the top. A hole in the base and one in the lower wall may represent, respectively, a casting flaw and post-depositional damage. The size and consequently the volume, though not the form, closely resembles that of lead alloy priming caps, as recorded from Newbury, Berkshire and Chelmsford, Essex (Harding 2012, page 40, plate 4). This identification is promp…

Lead powder flask lid. A cast conical cap with a rounded flat-topped end; torn. The metal retains a grey tint suggesting either a relatively recent date or unusual burial conditions. This object would close a powder flask held on a bandolier. In military usage, flasks in a string were known as the 12 Apostles. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1700. Height: 37mm, Width (as found): 26.8mm, Thickness (wall of cap): 2.1mm, Weight: 31.28gms

Lead possible powder flask cap. A plain cylindrical lid of diameter c.19mm with a bevelled rim which narrows its aperture to diameter c.11.5mm as well as projecting beyond its wall; patinated overall. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800. Diameter (at rim): 22.2mm, Height: 13.2mm, Thickness (at rim): 2.6mm, Weight: 18.00gms

Copper alloy flask. A small flat-sided bag-shaped vessel with a separate rim helping retain two equal halves, probably of pressed metal butted together. The external surface is rough, probably to enhance grip, and possibly darkened. Possibly a powder flask. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1650-1800 Height: 49.9mm, Width: 32.8mm, Thickness (overall, body): 15.1mm, Weight: 24.86gms

Lead possible powder flask cap. A flattened item, now of rectangular form but perhaps arising from the flattening of a cylindrical lid leaving straight edges and opposed rounded sides. The edges of the putative cylinder are pressed together at one end of the object; the other end shows brighter against an otherwise patinated surface, and may indicate a soldered mend or localised heating, possibly of recent date. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1700 Length: 31.7mm, Width: 28.8mm, Thickness: 10mm, Weight: 29.47gms

Copper alloy possible powder flask. An oval or pear-shaped vessel of pressed metal of thickness 0.8mm where un-textured, probably shaped around a former and joined at a seam, now flattened and splitting. Each side [in its present form] bears four bordered rows of pellets, the pellets being graduated in their sizes from a maximum diameter of 4.2mm at the mid-to-lower part of the flask, to 2.8mm at its upper edge, and 1.5mm at the base. This corrugation may have been intended to afford a good grip as well as for decorative effect. A narrow [3mm] horizontal ridge limits this surface. Two…

Lead powder flask cap. A small cylindrical vessel with thickened rim, now squashed closed. Patinated. This is the cap from a powder flask. A powder flask might be used singly by a sportsman or might be carried on a bandolier as one of the ‘twelve apostles’ to equip a musketeer, and contained a measured charge. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1700 Width: 32.1mm, Height: 18.3mm, Thickness (overall at base): 18.4mm, Weight: 23.78gms

Lead powder flask cap. A small cylindrical vessel with thickened rim, now squashed closed. A small loop is flattened against the lower side, for strung attachment to the flask. A vertical strengthening rib appears on one side of the lid, with a mould line opposite. Patinated. The smaller of two similar objects presented together. This is the cap from a powder flask. A powder flask might be used singly by a sportsman or might be carried on a bandolier as one of the ‘twelve apostles’ to equip a musketeer. It held a single measured charge. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1…
