Grey-brown flint of good quality, point. An elongated triangular flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side by angled scalar working, and with a bulb at the broader end of its ventral surface. The ventral surface appears to have lost a chip on one side, probably to recent adventitious damage. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC. White patinated flint. Rhomboid point fragment. This object is from the tip of a finely knapped and pressure flaked diamond shaped or rhomboid elongated point, of lozenge section. Though termed arrowheads or spearheads, these objects were superbly finished, and seem too fine to have served as practical projectile or weapon points. Some may rather have been made and deposited as examples of high quality flint working, with greater social than practical implications. Such points are known in the region from East Yorkshire's Neolithic round barrows, and also south of the Humber, as from …

Pale grey buff flint point. An elongated oval point with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and a flat ventral surface. Invasive angled retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows all around the edge of a sub-rhomboid flake, which now has two indented areas along one of its long sides. Short angled retouch executed from the ventral aspect follows the longer and more continuous curving edge and extends to the points at either end of the object. This object belongs to a class of finely worked points of uncertain function; they are larger than arrowheads but lack the robusticit…

Pale grey flint possible point. Possible Mousterian point. A sub-triangular flake with broad flakes struck from the dorsal side and with a bulbar ventral surface; despite its suspected manufacture by the Levallois technique the flake is of a thin lentoid or oval section. Thick white patina has developed over all surfaces. Suggested date: Middle Palaeolithic, 150,000-40,000 BC. Length: 83.9mm, Width: 50.3mm, Thickness: 11.5mm, Weight: 40.59gms

Pale grey flint point fragment. A thin sub-triangular flake with covering angled scalar retouch across its dorsal side, and with a flat ventral surface with invasive angled scalar retouch executed from the ventral aspect along one long edge. The effect was to confer a thin lentoid section on the object as a whole. The narrower tip may have been broken in antiquity; the broader end either then or later. The finder kindly suggests this to be an oblique arrowhead. This reporter would rather see this as a fragment of a triangular or rhomboid point, again a late Neolithic category of objec…

Large mammal limb bone implement handle. One end of a limb bone, roughly halved, knife-trimmed, polished and rounded at the articular surface at one end, and knife-trimmed to a tapered point at the other. Diagonal knife marks and chatter marks appear on flattened longitudinal zones near the broken long edges, and also in groups on facets around the tapered point. A drilled hole of diameter 3.7mm appears at the apex of the point, and may have served as a socket for a point or blade. Overall the impression is of a tool handle made from butchery waste which has been casually shaped and s…

Grey flint with re-formed cortex, point. A triangular point with angled scalar retouch across its dorsal side and with a lightly rippled ventral surface. White misty patina has formed across struck surfaces, suggesting a subsequent period of exposure to a calcareous environment. One corner was broken in antiquity as patina spreads across the break. Grey flint point. A thin sub-triangular flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a flat ventral surface with a small bulb at one corner. Angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows one straight edge, perhaps to form a cutting edge. White patina then developed over all struck surfaces, to be interrupted by a limited zone of short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect which follows that edge opposite the earlier putative cutting edge. Grey flint point. Triangular end fragment from a triangular or lozenge-shaped point of lentoid section, bearing covering angled scalar retouch across both sides. The finder kindly suggests this to be an arrowhead, and objects of this form are presented as such in North Lincolnshire Museum. However, both this and those other examples may rather relate to a species of later Neolithic point recorded in the early round barrows of East Yorkshire, whose quality might suggest a function as prestigious flint-workers’ trial or show pieces rather than projectile points – they tend to bear …

Grey flint with cortex spot, point. A sub-triangular flake with broad and narrow flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb and tiny platform at the broader end of the ventral surface. Dark grey flint possibly collected from the East Coast, possible point. A thick dentiform chunk bears a concave scar on its dorsal side, and ripples arising from the same impact on its ventral surface. A powdery ?marine-deposited patina? was removed by this draft, and also by short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect which follows a sub-triangular projecting point. The appearance of retouch along a long edge may be misleading, as most of the scars appear to result from edge-on impacts. The fresh condition of the flint is also much as would be found today on East Coast beache…

Pale grey and banded flint possible point. A trapezoid chunk with pointed end with a positive hinge fracture conferring a smooth surface to the longest edge which terminates in a sharp point. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows a short angled edge extending from the point. The ventral surface is flat, though a bulbar surface on the side opposite the hinge fracture is also smooth and with an adjacent hollow affords a thumb rest. Copper alloy point. A thin cast D-section pin which tapers to a blunt point at either end, bent near either end and also at its mid-point. This might have served as an awl though lacks the robusticity to be expected of a piercing tool. Though perhaps better for use with fabric, the object also lacks an eye to enable use as a needle.
