Pottery plaque. Two fragments of a large ceramic plaque of estimated diameter 450mm. This has a low and non-functional foot-ring on the reverse, and a painted or enamel design fired on the display face. A florid signature in apparently European script, which is undeciphered, was painted on the reverse before firing fixed the decorative scheme. The plaque was glazed on both sides and shows evidence for subsequent repair on the reverse of both fragments: a series of pin-holes of diameter 1.5mm are set 40mm or more apart along the broken edges of both fragments. Gloss varnish has also be…

Copper alloy Plaque. Pressed metal oval panel with a central sunken field and a fringed edge, now torn and folded along one edge. The central panel bears an enigmatic scene of intertwined foliage and animal and human figures, a design standing in half relief with its negative impression on the reverse. This scene is dominated by a sternly visaged human mask with high forehead and swept back hair wearing a necklace; a pair of horses legs protrude from the necklace. Above the mask a reclining figure appears pregnant, and the upper part of a female figure crooks her arm over the recl…

Lead alloy plaque. Cast figurative plaque with a loop at the top for attachment. The display side bears a face with its mouth agape, small nose, and eyebrows raised over staring eyes, and with tresses of hair above and falling to either side. Features such as the bottom lip and the brows are strongly modelled though the rendition as a whole should be characterised as low relief. Lightly patinated overall. The expression is one of rage or some other strong emotion. The object resembles a miniature of a theatrical mask as would be worn by performers in the Classical drama. As the object…

Copper alloy plaque. Cast concavo-convex shield-shaped plate bearing numerous punched holes of diameter circa 1mm on its convex face. The finder kindly notes these spell out HOME / SWEET / HOME over three lines. This phrase was first popularised as the title of a sentimental ballad written by John Howard Payne in 1823; then as a soldiers' song in the American Civil War; and as a text for children's needlework samplers - most of the letters may be rendered in straight lines. Lead plaque fragment. The larger part of an oval-ended plate cut from cast lead sheet metal of thickness exceeding c.2.5mm, which would be apt to light structural uses, as for flashings. The object is slightly concavo-convex, and its size resembles that of an improvised palm guard or 'sailmaker's glove'. Copper alloy plaque. A cast discoid plano-convex plate with a short worn lug on the back. This object appears to have been set into a larger object, probably an item of military equipment such as a gunstock.
