Aluminium aircraft debris. A curved fitting possibly from the undercarriage hydraulic system, and circa 20 fragments of melted aluminium. The only recognisable fragment is itself partly melted. These are thought to be parts of a Lancaster bomber (serial no. PB476) of 12 Squadron which crashed at 29 minutes past midnight on the morning of March 4 1945. This element is part of the starboard undercarriage strut; an identification kindly suggested by Susan Bootland and confirmed by members of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. Iron possible plane. Rectangular section object which tapers towards one end when viewed in profile, and with an off-centre round or U-shaped hole of diameter c.17mm which retains an angled blade of width c.14mm. The blade is apparently an insert separate from the body of the object and lies against an angled surface on one side, to the rear as a user would view it. The blade was revealed when mud was cleared from the hole in order to record the object. White metal possible aircraft debris. Five fragments of lightweight white metal, probably aluminium. Three fragments are of solidified molten metal, weighing 123.20gms. Another is of a thin [0.6mm] sheet or foil, and partly separated into strands - or this material may sheath a distinct but hidden component - weighing 36.61gms. The final fragment is one half of a short cylindrical object of internal diameter 27.8mm with flanges, now raggedly broken, on its outer side, and weighting 26.91gms.
