Pipeclay tobacco pipe. Moulded bulbous bowl, round pedestal foot and the lower stem of a pipe. The mot prominent features are the pronounced swelling of the back of bowl, and the relative angles of bowl and pedestal foot. The finder suggests a date of about 1690. The angles of foot and bowl are typical of Lincoln pipes dated to the period 1660-1690 (Mann nd, fig.6, nos 64-79), though most Lincoln pipes have a rouletted border to the bowl, whereas this example is plain. The generally bulbous form also relates this piece to the Yorkshire Bulbous pipes, as dated 1650-1670 at Clifford's T…

Ceramic; pipeclay tobacco pipe bowl. Moulded bowl of a clay pipe with flat near-oval pedestal foot and an angled bulbous bowl. A lightly scored line around the back of the rim of the bowl appears rather uneven to be a deliberate feature, but the front of the rim is lightly chamfered. Oswald (1975, Clay Pipes for the Archaeologist, BAR 14, fig. 3G, no. 6) gives the general form a date of 1660-1680; a Lincolnshire pipe with a similarly shaped foot from Kettleby Thorpe, Lincolnshire (ibid. , fig. 6M, no. 5) is more broadly dated to 1660-1690. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1660-1690. …
