The silver-gilt openwork badge is in the form of St George on horseback, slaying the dragon which lies underneath the horse. In one hand, the saint carries a lance which is inserted into the dragon's open mouth. The badge is incomplete at the apex of the saint's head and has no surviving means of attachment. The back of the badge is plain. Two silver-gilt badges also depicting St George and the dragon, date to the 15th century and were discovered in Long Stratton, Norfolk. See Treasure Annual Report 2005/6 for details (p. 132, 2005 T568, fig. 562).

Lead alloy possible pilgrim badge. Crudely cast figurative oval or vesica-shaped plate, portraying Mary as Queen of Heaven, crowned, with sceptre in her left hand, and the infant Jesus cradled in the crook of her right arm; a full robe reaches to her feet and she stands on a crescent moon. A radiating nimbus surrounds her. The motif draws on the conventions of sacred art and pilgrim souvenirs portraying the Virgin and Child, though the reduction of salient features to little more than lines or pellets is significantly coarser than most medieval renditions. The object would perhaps fit…

Lead pilgrim badge fragment. Cast face, probably excised from a badge from the Shrine of St John the Baptist at Amiens, France, as kindly identified by Rob Webley who comments: 'The face here also has the roundness of the John the Baptist face on the Amiens cult badges. Note also the straight lips, where on the Becket busts the upper lip curves downwards at the ends'. Cut from a slightly larger badge. Suggested date: Late Medieval, 1350-1500. Lead alloy pilgrim badge fragment. Cast discoid badge with openwork border comprising a cabled circumference separated from the central plate by a series of pellets of which three remain. A mould line runs across the back. The central plate depicts the bearded face of Christ in low relief, as this image was captured on the cloth with which Veronica, a woman of Jerusalem, wiped His face as He carried the Cross to Calvary. This relic, known as the Vernicle in England, was paraded in Rome from 1208 annually, and from the 14th century was exhibited there weekly. By 1450 its cult was very …

Lead alloy. Fragment of a pilgrim badge. An openwork crucifix with crudely modelled fleur-de-lis terminals to the ends of the arms bears the figure of Christ crucified. Two standing figures flank the cross, representing Mary on Christ’s left, and John the Evangelist on his right. The legend INRI is crudely represented on a panel at the top of the cross, which is surmounted possibly by a crown, or – more likely – a third fleur-de-lis; a fourth lies at the base of the cross. : Lead alloy pilgrim badge. Cast discoid badge with relief decoration comprising a border occupied by a recurring pellet in triangle motif and limited by a thick inner rim, with the inner field apparently portraying a human mask with thick lips and one eye with heavy brow above it - its counterpart is displaced downwards by abrasion. A pair of fixing holes of diameter 2.5mm appear to either side of the face, and both appear to result from the driving of pins at an angle through the plate, or perhaps are intended to accommodate a tied or stitched fastening. Lead alloy possible pilgrim badge. Cast openwork circular badge with features in low relief on both sides. A low knop at the edge may represent the stub of a pin or, less likely, a suspension loop. The openwork form would also permit sewn attachment. The mitre is curled back behind the face.
