An incomplete copper alloy high shoulders group Roman nail cleaner. The integral flat suspension loop with an external diameter of 9.6mm, is on the same plane as the shaft. The flat leaf-shaped shaft tapers from the shoulders to the two incomplete points. There is transverse scored line, placed above a vertical line down the centre of the shaft and probably continued to the division of the points. The surviving length is 37.6mm, the maximum width is 9.6mm, the thickness is 1.3mm and the weight is 1.70g. A similar example is known from Dragonby, North Lincs (May 1996, 76 and 71, …

A complete cast copper alloy Roman nail cleaner with moulded neck and shouldered blade. The shouldered pointed oval shaped plate is undecorated on both faces. At the top of the plate is an integral circular sectioned shaft with ribbed mouldings and which terminates with a suspension loop. The length is 34.1mm, the width is 15.0mm, the thickness is 2.2mm, the diameter of the shaft is 4.1mm and the weight is 4.12g.

Copper alloy nail cleaner. Cast elongated oval plate with a sharp bifid end with points separated by a narrow gutter on one side. The other end bears a lug on either side; its end is lost. Incised curvilinear decoration at this latter end appears to represent - depending on the angle it is viewed from - a long-tailed bird; or a tree or frond with other motifs including cross-hatch and creatures with prominent eyes, perhaps fishes. The front of the shaft is decorated with vertical ribbing. The suspension loops is integral to the shaft and is on the same plane. The two points on the end of the shaft are incomplete. Copper alloy probable nail cleaner. A narrow straight-sided strip with a point at either end, one longer and one shorter. The longer point may imitate the form of an angle-backed knife, an Anglo-Saxon and later form, while the shorter point is a downward angled triangle, p[erhaps a perfunctory tang for the 'knife'. The resemblance to a miniature tool or weapon may not be fortuitous, and is characteristic of both real and symbolic grooming tools accompanying early Anglo-Saxon cremation burials. Cast toilet implement with a flat oval terminal with drilled suspension hole, loop now open, a moulded neck and a flattened leaf-shaped blade, which tapers to a single point. Copper alloy nail cleaner of High shoulder (Group). A flat teardrop-shaped plate with elongated stem probably bifurcated at its end [one point lost]; the stubs of a loop may also appear on top of the expanded handle. Encrusted and abraded. Suggested date: Roman, 43-300. Length: 27.6mm, Width: 13.0mm, Thickness: 1.3mm, Weight: 1.30gms. A similar example was found at Dragonby, North Lincolnshire (May 1996, 76 and 70, fig. 11.24).

Copper alloy nail cleaner with high shouders. Flat plate with a round suspension loop at one end and a shouldered blade tapering gently towards its broken end. A ruled central longitudinal line appears on both sides, and presumably continued to define the division between two small points [now lost]. The small size of this object might suggest its incorporation in a suite of small cosmetic implements. Suggested date: Roman, AD 43-200. Length: 26.4mm, Width: 8.4mm, Thickness: 1.0mm, Weight: 1.34gms.
