A rim sherd or Roman Swanpool/Cantley type mortarium. The oxidised orange fabric has white slip, slag trituration grit on the inside and the rim has a bead and rounded flange. The diameter of the vessel would have been 270mm and the weight is 94.60g. A published comparison can be found in Darling (1999, 110, Fig.43, No.585) and dates to late 3rd -4th century.

Black inclusions often point to fabric made in the Coal Measures area, though none of the characteristic black grits are incorporated in the fabric of the body.
