Clay marbles. Eighteen marbles made of fired clay or plaster, of diameters ranging from 9.7mm [2, both painted silver] up to 17.1mm, the latter with turning lines on its surface; the majority are of c.15.8mm diameter. These popular children’s playthings were replaced from the later 19th century by stopper marbles from Codds bottles, and then by white [i.e. clear] glass marbles with complex or simple coloured trails, both types also represented in this assemblage. A white fossil sponge of diameter 19.2mm [not illustrated] was probably collected and added to this group as an ‘alleyâ…

Glass and fired clay marbles. Twelve marbles, seven of glass and five of fired clay, the latter also represented by larger groups from the site presented separately.
