Clay marbles. Eighteen marbles made of fired clay or plaster, of diameters ranging from 9.7mm [2, both painted silver] up to 17.1mm, the latter with turning lines on its surface; the majority are of c.15.8mm diameter. These popular children’s playthings were replaced from the later 19th century by stopper marbles from Codds bottles, and then by white [i.e. clear] glass marbles with complex or simple coloured trails, both types also represented in this assemblage. A white fossil sponge of diameter 19.2mm [not illustrated] was probably collected and added to this group as an ‘alleyâ…
