Lead Manufacturing waste. A scrap of cast lead sheet bearing scars from a rouletting wheel. This tool was possibly used to cut the lead sheet; some of the marks describe a circle of 38mm diameter, partially defining a disc, though other marks are apparently randomly distributed on both sides of the sheet. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800. Length: 67mm, Width: 46mm, Thickness: 1.8mm, Weight: 42.83gms.

Copper alloy Manufacturing Waste. Two lumps of melted copper alloy. The smaller appears to incorporate the part-melted upper bow and spring of a dolphin brooch, which would argue this metalworking to date to the late 1st century AD - the spring-fastened dolphin brooch being current AD 40-60, after which hinged versions became more common, the type falling out of use some time after AD80. Dimensions cited below are for the larger fragment. Lengths: 27mm and 36.6mm, Widths: 20.8mm and 26mm, Weights: 19.14gms and 32.39gms.

Glass Manufacturing waste. A fragment of melted glass or cullet. All edges are rounded by melting, so it will have been subjected to temperatures in excess of 600 degrees centigrade. This makes it impossible to determine whether this was originally window or vessel glass. This object complements other evidence for high temperature processes in the area. The glass is not iridescent but bears a slight whitish surface deposit formed after it was melted, which suggests it may either be of Roman or recent date. Suggested date: Roman, 40-400. Weight: 2.78gms.

Copper alloy Ingot. Cast plano-convex billet of metal, cut at both ends. The flat surface shows signs of the cooling of molten metal poured into a shallow open mould or scrape. The weight of the object may relate it to pre-Roman metrical systems, as with a recently reported ingot from Bigby, Lincolnshire, NLM-EBBC25, and a published example from Gussage All Saints, which was found in a 1st-century BC context (Jackson, R. 1990, Camerton The Late Iron Age and Early Roman Metalwork, London, British Museum Publications ltd., page 51, plate 16 no. 176). Length: 34.41mm, Wid…
