Record ID: NLM-816651
Object type: LAUREL LEAF
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Grey flint with cortex possible laurel leaf knife fragment. Sub-triangular fragment of lentoid section from the end of an elongated knife or dagger. The dorsal side bears invasive scalar working or retouch. The ventral side bears covering angled scalar retouch. The object was possibly broken recently, given the sharp nature of edges at its putative continuation. However, the lack of surface patina may suggest the object was incorporated into a sealed context shortly after its deposition, so this might have preserved an ancient break. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC. Length:…

Object type: LAUREL LEAF
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Mottled toffee-coloured iron-stained flint, probably collected from the East Coast; laurel leaf knife. A large flat oval flake of lentoid section with a single dished negative pot lid fracture on the dorsal side and with a nearly flat ventral surface. Short angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows most of the curved edge. Invasive angled scalar retouch executed from the ventral aspect follows about one third of the edge, along part of one side and the adjoining curved end, producing a robust cutting edge. The flake used to make the knife appears to have been incor…

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Grey flint of good quality, probably not local, laurel leaf knife. An oval flake with covering angled scalar retouch across both its sides, producing an oval section, and with light battering along its long edges, the latter possibly fortuitously formed. The absence of patina might suggest this to have been included in a sealed context lacking calcareous material. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC. Length: 54.2mm, Width: 33mm, Thickness: 12.8mm, Weight: 25.34gms

Grey buff flint with cortex spot possible laurel leaf knife fragment. Sub-triangular flake of lentoid section with covering angled scalar retouch across both sides, and broken across its mid point if the proposed identification is sustained. Dense misty patina has accumulated over all struck surfaces and the putative fracture, suggesting the object was broken in antiquity and subsequently endured a prolonged period of weathering. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC. Length: 41mm, Width: 32.4mm, Thickness: 7.4mm, Weight: 12.14gms.

Object type: LAUREL LEAF
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Dark grey flint forming a flat pebble with cortex on both its sides; probable laurel leaf knife fragment. Ovate flint with broad flakes trimmed from the cortex on both sides by hard hammer working, followed by angled invasive to covering scalar retouch of both sides. There is now a flat surface opposite the cutting edge which would be apt to receive pressure when the knife was in use. Whether this was an original feature or an adaptation following breakage is uncertain; as a fractured and hackled patch is immediately adjacent, the latter is perhaps more likely. A thick creamy patina …

Pale grey-buff flint possible laurel leaf knife fragment. One curved or ogival end from a flat to lentoid section blade, with covering angled long scalar retouch across the dorsal side with short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect following its edge, and with an undulating ventral surface; perhaps two thirds or more of the putative blade are lost. Patches of misty patina may suggest the object subsequently endured a limited period of exposure to a calcareous environment. Grey flint, possibly collected from the East Coast, probable laurel leaf knife. An oval flake with its dorsal side side covered by a fine buff patina perhaps acquired during water-rolling on the seashore, and the other bearing a dense white patina indicating long exposure to a calcareous environment, and with a cavity from an inclusion or fossil [now lost]. The dorsal side is trimmed by short scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect and following one long curving edge. Apparently similar chips on the ventral side, however, are probably adventitious impact damage. A long period m…
