Lead palm guard or 'Sailmaker's Glove' (as identified by finder). Cast oval gently concavo-convex plate, made to nestle in the palm. Several straight and intersecting cut marks suggest this was to protect the user of a knife, rather than to assist sewing. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1800. Length: 60.2mm, Width: 39.2mm, Thickness: 6.1mm, Weight: 85.88gms.

Lead palm guard or sailmaker's glove fragment. Scrap of cast lead sheet with deep straight cut marks on both its sides, executed from various directions. Patinated overall. This is considered to be a fragment from a cast lead sheet plate fitted to the palm of a craftsman using pointed or bladed tools, to protect his hand. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1800. Length: 16.8mm, Width: 12.9mm, Thickness: 2.8mm, Weight: 3.50gms.

Lead palm guard or 'Sailmaker's glove'. A disc or plate cut from lead sheet. This would be rested in the palm by a craftsman or worker holding a pointed tool or blade in one hand, and holding the object to be cut or pierced in the other. The use of the plate is shown by a dense pattern of scratches on both sides: the material is soft enough to be reshaped by gentle pressure when turned over. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800. Diameter: 33.4mm, Thickness: 2.2mm, Weight: 13.27gms.

Lead palm guard or sailmaker's glove. A small sub-discoid scrap of lead sheet of average thickness 2.5mm with fine scratches running mostly in two opposite directions, but with a few at other angles; patinated overall. The scratches are almost exclusively on one side, possibly suggesting a single episode of work. This was clearly an improvised protection for the hand of a craftsman using a small bladed implement. The ephemeral nature of the object was probably typical of accessories used by craftsmen in a rural setting, or for odd jobs. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1800. Di…

Lead probable palm guard or sailmaker's glove fragment. A fragment of thin cast sheet with numerous straight and intersecting cut marks on either side. At least three edges of the object appear torn. Patinated and lightly crumpled. The identification offered presumes use of a possibly improvised protection for a worker using bladed hand tools for small scale craft work. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800. Length: 26.3mm, Width: 24.8mm, Thickness: 1.7mm, Weight: 7.25gms

Lead palm guard or sailmaker's glove fragment. A fragment from a rounded flat object cut from cast lead sheet, with a curving profile well-adapted to fit in the hollow of the hand. Both sides bear a series of fine scratches variously oriented, with those on the presently concave side clearer and presumably more recent. The object was bent to fit the user's hand, and had been reversed in the course of its working life. The edges of the object are knife cut, with two cuts on each edge meeting at oblique angles, a peculiarly methodical episode which would have ended its working life. Pat…

Lead palm guard or sailmaker's glove fragment. A fragment of cast lead sheet with deeply scored knife cut lines running across its surface, and creased along a particularly deeply cut. Patinated This is considered to be a fragment broken or accidentally cut from a craftsman's palm guard, a common improvised tool to protect craft-workers using bladed hand tools. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800. Length: 19.3mm, Width: 17.1mm, Thickness: 2.3mm, Weight: 6.55gms

Lead palm guard or sailmaker's glove. Disc cut from lead sheet of light guage, now slightly concavo-convex. Crudely incised scratches define a rectilinear grid on both sides, and the current form suggests this was a reversible protection for the user of a knife or other light hand tool, bent to fit snugly in the contours of the craftsman's palm. This is the lightest example of a palm guard encountered by this reporter. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800. Diameter: 31.7mm, Thickness: 1.8mm, Weight: 11.81gms.

Lead possible palm guard or ‘sailmaker’s glove’, as kindly suggested by the finder. A cast sub-ovoid plate of low plano-convex section with one straight side, and with bubbled pitting on its convex side. The flat surface is lightly stippled, as from casting on a sand bed, which is sometimes an indication of a more extensive contemporary episode of lead-working and casting. The only evidence for use, as opposed to manufacture for the purpose envisaged, is a very few very recent scratches at right angles to each other on the flat side. It does, however, fit snugly in the palm of t…

Lead palm guard or 'sailmaker's glove'. A small thick [4mm] oval fragment of cast lead sheet of structural gauge, with deep straight but very short cuts on either side. Patinated. This is an extremely small example of a craftsman's palm guard, which enables fine work with a bladed instrument on an object held in the hand. The mass might point to reuse of an old quarter ounce weight. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1800. Length: 18.7mm, Width: 15mm, Thickness: 4mm, Weight: 6.93gms

Lead palm guard or 'sailmaker's glove' fragment. An oval plate of cast lead sheet, with one end lost. A series of finely incised parallel cuts and a single pit show the use of the object to protect the palm of a craftsman working with a bladed or pointed tool. Patinated. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1800 Length: 47.8mm, Width: 39.5mm, Thickness: 1.8mm, Weight: 28.67gms
